UNC Wilmington at Yale
Preview: UNC Wilmington Seahawks at Yale Bulldogs
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Two of the nation’s top mid-major programs, each boasting over 23 wins, will clash when the UNC Wilmington Seahawks visit the Yale Bulldogs in a non-conference men’s basketball matchup on Tuesday, March 17.
The Seahawks (26-6), coming off a rare stumble in an 85-70 home loss to Campbell on March 8, will look to regain their formidable form. Prior to that defeat, UNC Wilmington had won five of six, including decisive victories over Elon and North Carolina A&T. Their success is fueled by a balanced attack, but all eyes will be on forward Patrick Wessler. The standout is averaging 14.7 points over his last six games, highlighted by a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double in the loss to Campbell.
Yale (23-6) also seeks a bounce-back performance after a tough 88-84 overtime loss to Penn on Sunday. The Bulldogs had been rolling, winning seven of their previous eight contests before that setback. They are led by dynamic forward Isaac Celiscar, who is averaging 15.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists over his last six outings. Celiscar recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds against Penn and exploded for 27 points in a win over Cornell on March 14.
This game features a compelling contrast. UNC Wilmington brings a high-scoring offense that has topped 70 points in nine of its last ten games. Yale counters with a resilient squad familiar with close contests, having played in three overtime games since Feb. 9, winning two of them.
The matchup in the frontcourt between Wessler and Celiscar will be pivotal. Both players are capable of controlling the glass and providing significant scoring. The backcourt battle will also be crucial, as Yale’s Nick Townsend (17 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists vs. Penn) and UNC Wilmington’s Madison Durr (21 points vs. Campbell) look to provide backcourt stability.
Tip-off is set for Tuesday night at John J. Lee Amphitheater. Both teams are using this late-season test as a final tune-up and resume builder ahead of postseason play.
