Houston vs. Arizona
Houston, Arizona Set for Big 12 Title Clash
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — A heavyweight rematch with championship implications and potential NCAA tournament seeding on the line is set for Saturday, as the top-ranked Arizona Wildcats face the fourth-ranked Houston Cougars in the Big 12 tournament final.
The game tips off at 5 p.m. CDT at T-Mobile Center.
Arizona (31-2), the tournament’s top seed, narrowly advanced with an 82-80 win over Iowa State on Friday behind Anthony Dell’Orso’s 26 points. The Wildcats, installed as 3.5-point favorites, carry a nine-game winning streak and seek their first conference tournament title since joining the Big 12.
Houston (28-5), the seed, arrives after a dominant 69-47 semifinal victory over Kansas. The Cougars’ stifling defense has held opponents to an average of 54 points in their two tournament games.
This is a rematch of Arizona’s 73-66 victory in Houston on Feb. 21, one of only two losses the Cougars have suffered in their last 14 games. In that contest, Dell’Orso scored 22 points for Arizona, while Houston’ Kingston Flemings had 17 points and eight rebounds.
Flemings enters Saturday on a hot streak, averaging 18.3 points over his last four games, including 21 in Friday’s win. Dell’Orso has been equally potent, scoring 20 or more points in three of his last five outings.
The matchup features a classic contrast: Houston’s nation-leading defense against Arizona’s high-powered offense, which averages over 86 points per game. The Wildcats won the regular-season meeting by overcoming Houston’s physicality with efficient shooting, particularly from Dell’Orso and backcourt mate Jaden Bradley, who had 15 points and seven assists in Friday’s semifinal.
Arizona’s only losses this season came in overtime against Texas Tech and on the road at Kansas. Houston’s defeats have all come against ranked Big 12 opponents, with three by four points or fewer.
The winner will likely secure a seed in the NCAA tournament’s field of 68, which will be announced Sunday. The over/under for the game is 136.5 points.
