North Carolina Central vs. Howard
NORFOLK, Va. (Interstat) — A surging Howard team will look to continue its dominant run through the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference when it hosts North Carolina Central in a men’s Division I basketball game Saturday at the Constant Convocation Center.
The Bison (22-10) enter as heavy favorites, having won nine of their last ten games, including a 78-61 victory over South Carolina State on Friday. They have steamrolled conference opponents, winning their last eight MEAC contests by an average margin of 24.5 points. That stretch includes a 100-67 demolition of these same Eagles just three weeks ago on Feb. 21.
Howard’s offense is powered by guard Cam Gillus, who is coming off a 25-point performance Friday. Over his last six games, Gillus has averaged 14.8 points and 6.8 assists, showcasing his dual-threat capability. In the February rout of NCCU, he dished out six assists.
The North Carolina Central Eagles (14-17) arrive on a modest two-game winning streak after a 59-53 win over Delaware State on Friday. Their path has been far more turbulent, however, with five losses in their last eight games. The Eagles will need a monumental reversal to challenge the Bison, having lost the two head-to-head meetings this season by an average of 30.5 points.
NCCU’s hopes will rest largely on the scoring of guard Kyric Davis. He poured in 23 points in Friday’s win and scored 23 in the loss at Howard last month. Davis has averaged 17.4 points over his last five contests, but will require significant support from teammates like Kelechi Okworogwo, who added 15 points and three blocks against Delaware State.
Howard has been installed as an 11-point favorite. The over/under is set at 143.5 points.
The game tips off at 7 p.m. EDT as both teams conclude their regular season schedules before the conference tournament.
