Wisconsin vs. Michigan
Preview: Michigan, Surging Wisconsin Meet in Big Ten Showcase
CHICAGO (Interstat) — The second-ranked Michigan Wolverines, boasting one of the nation’s premier records, will face a surging Wisconsin Badgers team in a high-stakes Big Ten Conference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at the United Center.
Michigan (30-2) enters as a heavy favorite, installed at -12.5 points, but will confront a Wisconsin squad riding a wave of momentum. The Badgers (24-9) have won five of their last six, including a 91-88 overtime victory at Illinois on Friday night. That win followed a thrilling 85-82 triumph over Washington a day prior.
The Wolverines, whose only losses this season came against Duke and in a January shootout with these same Badgers, advanced with a gritty 71-67 win over Ohio State on Friday. Michigan’s depth and efficiency have been hallmarks of its season.
All eyes will be on the guard play of Wisconsin’s Nick Boyd, who is in the midst of a spectacular individual run. Boyd poured in 38 points in Friday’s overtime win at Illinois, his third 30-plus point performance in the last six games. Over his last seven contests, he is averaging 24.7 points and 6.1 assists.
Michigan will counter with 7-foot-3 center Aday Mara, a formidable presence in the paint. Mara is coming off a 17-point, 7-rebound effort against Ohio State and provides a critical defensive anchor, averaging multiple blocks per game during conference play.
The teams met just over two months ago in Ann Arbor, with Wisconsin pulling off a 91-88 upset. Boyd scored 22 points in that victory, while Mara had 14 points and 3 blocks for Michigan.
The Wolverines have been nearly flawless since, winning 15 of 16. Wisconsin’s recent form, however, suggests another tightly contested game. The over/under is set at 159.5 points, indicating expectations for an offensive battle.
Saturday’s contest serves as a showcase for the deep Big Ten Conference and could have significant implications for NCAA tournament seeding next week. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. EDT.
