Huskies Dominate Musketeers in Big East Tournament Showcase
NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a showcase of overwhelming efficiency and depth, the Connecticut Huskies delivered a commanding performance to defeat the Xavier Musketeers 93-68 in a Big East Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night at Madison Square Garden.
The contest, played before a crowd of 19,812, was never in doubt after a dominant first half from the Huskies. Connecticut built a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to its 28th victory of the season, improving to 28-4 overall. Xavier fell to 15-18.
The most critical phase of the game was its opening segment, where Connecticut established a decisive advantage that Xavier could never meaningfully challenge. The Huskies opened the game on a 12-2 run, highlighted by early three-pointers from Solo Ball and Alex Karaban. While Xavier’s Filip Borovicanin tried to keep pace with a series of tough jump shots, Connecticut’s offensive execution was relentless. The Huskies shot a scorching 57.4 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on 7 of 17 three-point attempts, and capitalized on second-chance opportunities with 8 offensive rebounds. By the time Solo Ball sank three free throws in the final minute of the half, Connecticut had secured a 50-30 lead, effectively putting the game out of reach before the intermission.
The Huskies’ offensive rating of 142.7, scoring 93 points on just 65 possessions, underscored a night of superior shot-making and ball movement. Connecticut finished the game shooting 57.4 percent overall, compared to Xavier’s 37.3 percent. The Huskies also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding Xavier 41-31.
Borovicanin was a bright spot for the Musketeers, leading all scorers with 22 points. Roddie Anderson added 15 points for Xavier. But their efforts were drowned out by a balanced Connecticut attack that placed five players in double figures and saw significant contributions from its bench.
Ball led the Huskies with 19 points, while Tarris Reed controlled the interior with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Alex Karaban filled the stat sheet with 15 points, 4 assists and 3 offensive rebounds. Key reserves Silas Demary and Jayden Ross each chipped in 9 points, with Ross adding 3 assists and 2 steals. Braylon Mullins provided impactful defense with 3 blocks to go with 9 points and 3 assists.
Xavier struggled with consistency throughout, particularly from the free-throw line where they converted only 21 of 33 attempts. The Musketeers also managed just 6 assists on 19 made field goals, indicative of an offense that often settled for isolated plays against a stout Connecticut defense.
The victory continued Connecticut’s recent dominance in the series, having now defeated Xavier by an average of 27 points in their three meetings this season. The Huskies entered the game as overwhelming favorites according to advanced metrics, and their performance from the opening tip validated that projection.
With the regular season concluded, both teams now look ahead to the Big East Tournament. Connecticut will seek to solidify its case for a high seed in the NCAA Tournament, while Xavier will aim to salvage its season with an unexpected run at Madison Square Garden next week.
