Kent State Pulls Away Late to Advance in MAC Tournament

CLEVELAND (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second-half surge, the Kent State Golden Flashes pulled away from the Ohio Bobcats for an 86-75 victory in a Mid-American Conference men’s basketball tournament quarterfinal on Thursday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

A crowd of 9,123 saw the top-seeded Golden Flashes, who improved to 24-8, overcome a tight first half behind the prolific scoring of Delrecco Gillespie and Morgan Safford to end the season for the ninth-seeded Bobcats, who finished 14-17.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded over a five-minute stretch early in the second half. Leading just 44-42, Kent State unleashed a 19-4 run that transformed a tense contest into a commanding double-digit advantage. The burst was fueled by stifling defense and efficient transition offense. The Golden Flashes forced four Ohio turnovers during the run, converting them into easy baskets. Gillespie, a 6-foot-8 forward from Benton Harbor, Michigan, was instrumental, scoring seven points in the surge, while Safford added five, including a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 53-46. Ohio, which had shot effectively in the first half, went cold and was repeatedly disrupted by Kent State’s defensive pressure, managing just two field goals during the pivotal span.

Gillespie finished as the game’s standout performer, scoring 27 points in 34 minutes, a significant uptick from his recent outings. He was complemented perfectly by Safford, who added 24 points. Their combined 51 points provided the consistent offensive firepower Kent State needed. Cian Medley of Sicklerville, New Jersey, orchestrated the attack with seven assists, while Rob Whaley contributed 14 points and physical play inside.

Ohio, which had lost to Kent State 72-57 in the regular season, was led by a strong effort from Aidan Hadaway of Lafayette, Georgia, who scored 24 points, and Javan Simmons of Columbus, Ohio, who added 22. Jackson Paveletzke of Kimberly, Wisconsin, distributed seven assists. The Bobcats hung tough in a back-and-forth first half, trailing just 40-38 at the break after Hadaway beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer.

The second half, however, belonged entirely to Kent State. After Ohio drew within two points early, the Golden Flashes’ game-changing run established a 63-46 lead with 14 minutes remaining. The Bobcats never recovered, unable to cut the deficit below nine points the rest of the way as Kent State efficiently managed the clock and converted at the free-throw line down the stretch.

Kent State, which entered the game as a 4-point favorite according to oddsmakers, advanced to the tournament semifinals. The Golden Flashes’ victory also sent the total score of 161 over the betting over/under line of 160.5. Ohio’s season concludes with its fourth loss in the last five games.
