Louisiana Tech Rallies Past Middle Tennessee in Conference USA Tournament
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — AJ Bates scored 29 points and dished out six assists, leading Louisiana Tech to an 80-69 victory over Middle Tennessee in a Conference USA men’s basketball tournament quarterfinal on Thursday night at T. M. Elmore Gymnasium.
In a game defined by runs and defensive pressure, the Bulldogs used a dominant first-half stretch to build a cushion that the Blue Raiders could never fully erase. Louisiana Tech, the home team on the neutral floor, improved to 19-13 overall and advanced to the tournament semifinals. Middle Tennessee’s season ended with a 17-15 record.
The contest was a rubber match after the teams split their regular-season meetings, each winning on their home court by a single point. This time, Louisiana Tech seized control early. After a slow start from both sides, the Bulldogs unleashed a 17-2 run midway through the first half, turning a 12-10 lead into a 29-12 advantage. The surge was fueled by stifling defense that forced multiple Middle Tennessee turnovers and translated them into easy baskets.
Bates, a 6-foot-3 guard from Houston, was the catalyst throughout. He scored from all three levels, hitting floaters, step-back jumpers, and a pair of three-pointers, while also orchestrating the offense. His backcourt mate, DJ Dudley, added 16 points, and forward Avery Thomas chipped in 15 points, including three shots from beyond the arc.
Middle Tennessee, which shot poorly in the opening period and managed only 25 points, found its rhythm after halftime. Guards Tre Green and Jahvin Carter led a spirited comeback attempt. Green finished with 20 points, while Carter scored 18 of his total in the second half. The Blue Raiders opened the second half on a 12-2 run, cutting a 14-point halftime deficit to just 41-37 within the first four minutes.
Every time the Blue Raiders threatened, however, Bates and the Bulldogs had an answer. When Middle Tennessee closed to within 54-50 with just over nine minutes remaining, Bates immediately responded with a three-pointer. Shortly after, with the lead at 61-56, Bates found Kaden Cooper for a clutch three-pointer to push the advantage back to eight. Cooper finished with nine points and was a key contributor off the bench.
The most critical sequence came with under three minutes to play and Louisiana Tech holding a 69-65 lead. Middle Tennessee’s Sean Smith was fouled on a three-point attempt but missed two of his three free throws. On the ensuing possession, Bates drove and scored on a difficult floating jumper to extend the lead to 72-65, effectively sealing the game. Louisiana Tech then closed it out at the free-throw line, with Bates hitting four straight in the final minute.
Middle Tennessee’s interior presence, Chris Loofe, scored eight points but was hampered by foul trouble. Torey Alston added nine points and Sean Smith had 10 points and four assists for the Blue Raiders.
Louisiana Tech’s defense was the defining story, generating 15 steals and converting 19 Middle Tennessee turnovers into 24 points. The Bulldogs also outrebounded the Blue Raiders 38-31. The game’s total points, 149, surpassed the pregame over/under line of 132.
The Bulldogs will face the winner of the late game between Missouri State and Florida International in the semifinals on Friday. Middle Tennessee’s season concludes after a third consecutive loss, despite having been a slight pregame favorite according to oddsmakers.
