Red Storm Overpowers Friars in Big East Showdown at Garden

NEW YORK (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant opening statement, the Saint John’s Red Storm overwhelmed the Providence Friars from the outset and never relented, securing an 85-72 victory in a Big East Conference men’s basketball tournament quarterfinal Thursday afternoon at Madison Square Garden.

A raucous crowd of 19,812 watched the Red Storm, the tournament’s top seed, seize control with a blistering first-half performance. Saint John’s raced out to a 48-27 halftime lead, effectively deciding the contest in the opening 20 minutes. The Red Storm’s defensive intensity and transition offense were the catalysts, converting Providence’s early miscues into a cascade of points.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the first ten minutes, where Saint John’s established a commanding lead that Providence could never seriously threaten. The Red Storm opened the game on a 20-2 run, a stretch characterized by relentless defensive pressure that forced the Friars into rushed shots and turnovers. Providence missed its first eight field goal attempts and committed four turnovers before finally scoring its first basket nearly five minutes into the game. During this decisive opening salvo, Saint John’s scored 17 points off turnovers and tallied 10 fastbreak points, setting a physical and tempo-based tone that lasted the entire night.

Zuby Ejiofor was the central figure for Saint John’s, dominating the interior with 21 points, five assists and three blocks in just 23 minutes. The 6-foot-9 forward from Garland, Texas, was efficient and disruptive, anchoring the defense and facilitating the offense from the post. His early activity, including offensive rebounds and blocked shots, fueled the Red Storm’s initial surge.

Providence, which ends its season at 15-18, showed fight after intermission, outscoring Saint John’s 45-37 in the second half behind a prolific scoring effort from Stefan Vaaks. The 6-foot-7 guard from Tabasalu, Estonia, poured in 23 points, with 18 coming after halftime, including four three-pointers. Jaylin Sellers added 21 points for the Friars, and Ryan Mela contributed 16, but their combined efforts only managed to trim the deficit, not overturn it.

Saint John’s, now 26-6 and advancing to the semifinals, showcased its depth and balance. Alongside Ejiofor’s standout performance, Bryce Hopkins scored 14 points, while Oziyah Sellers and Ian Jackson each added 14 off the bench. The Red Storm’s advantages were comprehensive: a 46-36 edge in points in the paint, a 23-8 margin in fastbreak points, and a 17-10 difference in points off turnovers.

The victory extended Saint John’s winning streak to eight games and avenged one of its few conference losses this season, a 77-71 setback to Providence on Jan. 3. Since that game, the Red Storm have lost only once. They entered the contest as overwhelming favorites according to advanced metrics, and their performance justified that projection with a display of focused, high-energy basketball from the opening tip.

Providence’s season concludes with a losing record, though the Friars had shown recent improvement with three wins in their last four games entering the tournament. Saint John’s moves on, its sights set on a Big East tournament title and a high seed in the upcoming NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.
