Missouri State Upsets Liberty in Conference USA Tournament Opener

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a gritty, physical contest that defied pregame projections, the Missouri State Bears authored a significant upset Wednesday night, defeating the Liberty Flames 77-69 in a Conference USA men’s basketball game at T. M. Elmore Gymnasium.

Fueled by a dominant 31-point performance from Michael Osei-Bonsu, the Bears snapped a three-game losing streak against Liberty and improved their season record to 16-17. The Flames, who entered the game with a 25-6 mark and an 87.9% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, fell to 25-7. A crowd of 3,233 watched as the underdog Bears, installed as 5-point underdogs, controlled the second half to secure the victory.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the final ten minutes, as Missouri State transformed a narrow, back-and-forth affair into a decisive victory. After Liberty’s Brett Decker hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 50 with just over 15 minutes remaining, the Bears unleashed a game-defining 17-2 run. The surge was almost exclusively powered by Osei-Bonsu, the 6-foot-4, 280-pound force from Bolingbrook, Illinois. He scored 11 consecutive points during the stretch, showcasing an array of post moves with hook shots and layups, while also contributing a key blocked shot on the defensive end.

Liberty, which had led 37-33 at halftime, went ice cold from the field during this pivotal span, missing seven consecutive shots and committing two turnovers over nearly six minutes. The Flames’ offense, which had been efficient in the first half, could not find an answer for Missouri State’s intensified defensive pressure or counter Osei-Bonsu’s offensive onslaught. By the time Kobi Williams capped the run with a 3-pointer at the 12:14 mark, Missouri State had built a 67-52 lead, its largest of the night.

Liberty made several attempts to claw back, closing to within 67-59 after a Zach Cleveland free throw with just over five minutes left. Each time the Flames threatened, however, Missouri State had a response. A critical sequence saw Osei-Bonsu find Trey Williams Jr. for a 3-pointer to push the lead back to 11, and later, after Liberty cut it to eight again, Osei-Bonsu delivered another clutch hook shot in the lane to stem the tide with 2:42 remaining. The Flames would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Osei-Bonsu’s 31-point effort on Wednesday marked a season-high and a dramatic escalation from his recent performances, which included 24 points against Sam Houston and 20 against Middle Tennessee. He added four assists and a block in 34 minutes. He was ably supported by Kobi Williams of St. Louis, who played the entire 40 minutes and contributed 19 points and three assists. Trey Williams Jr. of Centralia, Illinois, added 10 points.

Liberty was led by Zach Cleveland of Bloomington, Illinois, who scored 20 points. Kaden Metheny of Morgantown, West Virginia, and Brett Decker of Cecilia, Kentucky, each added 14 points for the Flames, who struggled to find consistent scoring outside of that trio. Colin Porter of Ashland, Kentucky, directed the offense with five assists but was hampered by poor shooting.

The first half was a tightly contested affair featuring eight lead changes. Liberty used an 11-0 run, fueled by 3-pointers from Metheny and Zander Carter, to take a 27-17 lead. Missouri State responded with a 12-2 run of its own, keyed by Osei-Bonsu and Williams, to tie the game at 29. The Flames took a slim four-point lead into the break, but the Bears’ second-half adjustments, particularly their commitment to feeding Osei-Bonsu in the post and their defensive resilience, proved the difference.

The game’s total points, 146, finished just under the pregame over/under line of 144. The victory gives Missouri State momentum and a winning record in its last two games, while Liberty will look to regroup after a surprising home-court defeat in the final stages of the regular season.
