LSU vs. Kentucky

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A season of narrow defeats for LSU will collide with Kentucky’s late-season slide when the Tigers and Wildcats meet Wednesday in a first-round matchup of the 2026 SEC Men’s Basketball Championship.

The game at Bridgestone Arena pits the seed LSU Tigers (15-16) against the seed Kentucky Wildcats (19-12), with both teams seeking momentum after frustrating regular-season finishes. Kentucky won the lone regular-season meeting 75-74 in Baton Rouge on Jan. 14.

LSU enters the postseason having lost eight of its last nine games, but the Tigers have been agonizingly close, with five of those losses by six points or fewer. That includes a triple-overtime, 94-91 heartbreaker to Texas A&M in their regular-season finale Saturday. Guard Jalen Reece logged 51 minutes in that loss, scoring 17 points and dishing five assists. Over his last seven games, Reece is averaging 12.1 points and 6.7 assists, serving as the engine for an LSU offense that ranks among the SEC’s best but is undermined by one of the league’s weakest defenses.

Kentucky, meanwhile, has dropped four of its last five, including an 84-77 home loss to Florida on Saturday. The Wildcats’ struggles have come despite stellar scoring from guard Otega Oweh, who averaged 24.8 points over his final five regular-season games. He poured in 28 points in the loss to the Gators. Like LSU, Kentucky has been plagued by an inability to close, with three of its recent losses by three points or fewer.

The winner advances to face fifth-seeded Tennessee in the second round Thursday. For LSU, a victory would keep alive faint hopes of reaching the .500 mark required for NIT consideration. For Kentucky, a program with lofty March expectations, avoiding a quick exit is paramount to salvaging a season that has fallen short of standards.

Wednesday’s contest will likely hinge on which team can make critical stops in the final minutes, a weakness for both squads all season. Reece’s playmaking against Oweh’s explosive scoring sets the stage for a backcourt duel with both teams desperate to extend their stay in Music City.
