East Tennessee State Rallies Past Western Carolina in Southern Conference Thriller

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering reversal of momentum, Brian Taylor scored 22 points and led a furious second-half comeback as East Tennessee State rallied from a 14-point halftime deficit to edge Western Carolina 69-67 in a Southern Conference men’s basketball thriller Sunday at Kimmel Arena.

The Buccaneers, who improved to 23-10, were listless and outplayed for the opening 20 minutes, trailing 38-24 at the break. The Catamounts, who fell to 15-16, controlled the first half behind the interior play of Marcus Kell, who scored 12 of his 18 points before halftime, and the perimeter shooting of Cord Stansberry and Tahlan Pettway.

The second half, however, was a complete inversion. East Tennessee State emerged from the locker room with immediate purpose, spearheaded by Taylor, a 6-foot-4 guard from St. Louis. He scored 16 of his game-high 22 points after halftime, attacking the basket and hitting timely jumpers to ignite a 21-4 run over the first seven minutes of the period. The burst completely erased Western Carolina’s cushion and gave the Buccaneers a 45-42 lead, their first since the opening minutes of the game.

Western Carolina, which had won the previous two meetings between the teams this season including a 90-88 victory in Johnson City just over a month ago, struggled to stem the tide. The Catamounts went scoreless for over four minutes during the pivotal run, their offense stalling against a revitalized ETSU defense that forced 10 second-half turnovers.

The game settled into a tense, back-and-forth affair over the final 10 minutes, featuring nine lead changes. Blake Barkley, a 6-foot-7 forward from Morgantown, West Virginia, was crucial for ETSU down the stretch, scoring 19 points and grabbing key rebounds. His hook shot with 2:48 remaining put the Buccaneers ahead 59-57, a lead they would not relinquish.

Western Carolina had multiple chances in the final minute. Trailing 67-65, the Catamounts forced a turnover and had an opportunity to tie or take the lead, but a traveling violation on Tahlan Pettway with 25 seconds left handed possession back to ETSU. The Buccaneers then executed under pressure, finding Barkley for a layup while being fouled with 38 seconds to go. He completed the three-point play to extend the lead to 68-65.

After Tidjiane Dioumassi, who scored 14 points for Western Carolina, made two free throws to cut the deficit to one, ETSU’s Taylor was fouled with 19 seconds left. He made the second of two free throws to make it 69-67. Western Carolina called a timeout to set up a final play.

The Catamounts worked the ball to Stansberry, who finished with 16 points, but his driving jumper in the lane was blocked by ETSU’s Jordan McCullum with 12 seconds remaining. The Buccaneers secured the rebound, and though they missed two subsequent free throws, Western Carolina’s desperation heaves from beyond the arc by Marcus Kell and Tahlan Pettway in the final seconds missed their mark, sealing the dramatic comeback victory for the home team.

Beyond Taylor and Barkley, East Tennessee State received 13 points and three assists from point guard Jaylen Smith. McCullum added 11 points and two blocks, including the critical late-game rejection.

For Western Carolina, Kell’s 18 points and Dioumassi’s 14 were not enough to overcome a second half in which they were outscored 45-29 and shot just 29 points on the period. The Catamounts also committed 15 turnovers for the game, which ETSU converted into 18 points.

The victory solidified East Tennessee State’s position near the top of the Southern Conference standings as the regular season concludes, while Western Carolina’s hopes for a winning season were dashed with the narrow defeat. The game’s total of 136 points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 151.5, largely due to the first-half defensive struggle. East Tennessee State covered the pregame spread of -2.5 as a narrow favorite.
