Wright State Outlasts Northern Kentucky in High-Scoring Horizon League Affair
INDIANAPOLIS (Interstat) — In a high-octane Horizon League tournament clash defined by offensive efficiency and a decisive second-half surge, the Wright State Raiders outlasted the Northern Kentucky Norse 103-90 on Monday night at Fairgrounds Coliseum.
The game, a rematch of a one-point Wright State victory just 10 days prior, lived up to its billing as a shootout but saw the Raiders separate after halftime to advance. Both teams finished with identical 80 possessions, but Wright State’s superior execution proved the difference. The Raiders posted a blistering offensive rating of 129.3, fueled by 57 second-half points, while Northern Kentucky’s own solid rating of 112.1 was not enough to keep pace.
Wright State guard Michael Cooper, a junior from Jeffersonville, Indiana, led all scorers with 25 points, including 15 in the second half, to go with three assists. His backcourt mate, TJ Burch of Dallas, Texas, was equally instrumental, contributing 22 points, three assists and two blocks. Their combined backcourt pressure was a key factor, as Wright State forced 15 Norse turnovers, converting them into transition opportunities.
Northern Kentucky, which finished its season at 19-14, was led by the formidable frontcourt duo of Kael Robinson and LJ Wells. Robinson, from Hamilton, New Zealand, scored 24 points, while Wells of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, added 23. Donovan Oday chipped in 15 points for the Norse, who shot 45.3% from the field but were ultimately undone by Wright State’s hotter hand and ability to get to the free-throw line.
The most important stretch of the game came early in the second half, with Wright State clinging to a narrow 46-44 lead. The Raiders erupted with a 12-2 run over a three-minute span, turning a tight contest into a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish. The spurt was emblematic of the Raiders’ night, featuring a mix of defensive stops, transition baskets, and clutch shooting. A critical sequence saw Cooper convert a three-point play, followed by a steal and score from Burch, and capped by a Dominic Pangonis three-pointer that forced a Northern Kentucky timeout with the Raiders leading 58-46.
Northern Kentucky, which had battled back from a seven-point halftime deficit in the teams’ previous meeting, could not mount a similar comeback. Every time the Norse threatened to cut the lead to single digits, Wright State had an answer, often from Cooper or Burch. The Raiders shot a sizzling 55.9% from the field for the game and were relentless in attacking the rim, attempting 33 free throws and making 28, an 84.8% clip.
The Raiders also dominated the glass in key moments, limiting Northern Kentucky to just five offensive rebounds despite the Norse’s 13 offensive boards. Wright State’s balanced attack included 14 points from Kellen Pickett, 13 from Solomon Callaghan, and 12 from Pangonis. The Raiders recorded 10 assists and 10 steals, showcasing active hands and unselfish play.
For Northern Kentucky, the loss ends a season that saw them finish 19-14. They shot well from deep, hitting 9 of 23 three-point attempts, and fought to a 44-44 draw on the boards, but could not contain Wright State’s offensive onslaught after halftime. The Norse’s six assists against 15 turnovers highlighted the disruptive nature of the Raiders’ defense.
Wright State, now 22-11, defied the pregame spread that had installed Northern Kentucky as a slight 1.5-point favorite. The combined score of 193 points sailed over the over/under line of 158.5, reflecting the offensive nature of the contest. The Raiders will now look to carry their potent offensive form into the next round of the Horizon League tournament.
