Tennessee State Routs Morehead State in OVC Matchup

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — Tennessee State unleashed a dominant first-half offensive clinic and never looked back, cruising to a 93-67 victory over Morehead State in an Ohio Valley Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Ford Center.

The Tigers, improving to 23-9 overall, seized control from the opening tip and built a commanding 55-34 halftime lead. The 21-point cushion proved insurmountable for the Eagles, who fell to 20-13. A crowd of 1,545 watched as Tennessee State avenged a 94-86 loss to Morehead State just three weeks prior.

The most important part of the game was Tennessee State’s blistering start, which effectively decided the contest within the first ten minutes. The Tigers opened the game on a 20-7 run, fueled by precise outside shooting and disruptive defense. Travis Harper and Dante Harris set the tone with early three-pointers, and the Tigers’ defensive pressure forced several early Morehead State turnovers. This initial surge established a tempo and a lead that Morehead State, despite a more competitive second half, could never seriously threaten.

Tennessee State’s offense was a balanced and efficient machine. Antoine Lorick, a 6-foot-9 forward from Augusta, Georgia, led the way with 18 points, including several key baskets during the Tigers’ early onslaught, and added two blocks in just 23 minutes. His interior presence was a constant issue for the Eagles. Guards Dante Harris of Washington, D.C., and Aaron Nkrumah of Worcester, Massachusetts, orchestrated the attack. Harris finished with 16 points and four assists, while Nkrumah contributed 14 points and a game-high six assists. Forwards Travis Harper (Columbus, Georgia) and Carlous Williams (Hattiesburg, Mississippi) each chipped in 17 and 16 points, respectively, showcasing the Tigers’ depth.

Morehead State, which had won five of its last six games entering the contest, struggled to find consistent offense against Tennessee State’s defensive pressure. George Marshall, a 6-4 guard from Jackson, Mississippi, led the Eagles with 17 points. Davion Cunningham of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Anouar Mellouk of Amsterdam, Netherlands, each added 12 points. The Eagles shot just 34 points in the first half and were unable to put together a sustained run to cut significantly into the large deficit after the break.

The Tigers shot the ball effectively throughout, particularly in the decisive first half where they connected on eight three-pointers. Their ball movement, evidenced by 18 team assists, consistently generated high-percentage looks. Defensively, they limited Morehead State’s opportunities in transition and protected the rim, recording five blocks as a team.

While Morehead State played Tennessee State nearly even in the second half, being outscored only 38-33, the damage was already done. The Eagles could get no closer than 17 points in the final period as the Tigers comfortably managed the large lead, substituting liberally in the final minutes.

The victory solidified Tennessee State’s position near the top of the OVC standings as the regular season concludes, while Morehead State will look to regroup ahead of the conference tournament. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Tennessee State entered the game with a 64.1 percent probability to win. The Tigers also covered the pregame spread of -3.5. The total score of 160 surpassed the over/under line of 152.5.
