High Point Edges UNC Asheville in Tight Big South Contest
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a decisive second-half surge and a crucial late-game sequence, the High Point Panthers outlasted the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 75-71 in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at ETSU Athletic Center.
The victory improved High Point’s season record to 29-4, while UNC Asheville fell to 15-17. The game, played before an announced attendance of 1, saw the Panthers overcome a narrow halftime deficit to complete a regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs.
High Point, which entered as a heavy favorite, trailed 34-33 at intermission but seized control after the break. The Panthers erupted for 42 second-half points, leveraging their transition game and defensive pressure to create separation. High Point finished with a commanding 23-8 advantage in fastbreak points and forced 12 UNC Asheville turnovers, converting them into 16 points.
The most critical stretch of the contest occurred in the final 90 seconds with High Point clinging to a 71-68 lead. Following a missed free throw by the Panthers, UNC Asheville’s Toyaz Solomon secured the defensive rebound, giving the Bulldogs a chance to tie. But on the ensuing possession, High Point’s Scotty Washington stripped Solomon of the ball. The Panthers capitalized immediately, as Rob Martin found Chase Johnston for a clutch three-pointer from the wing, extending the lead to 74-68 with just over a minute remaining.
UNC Asheville, led by a heroic individual effort, refused to fold. Solomon answered with a layup to cut the deficit to 74-70. After a pair of missed High Point free throws, Justin Wright drove for another Bulldogs layup, making it 74-71 with nine seconds left. High Point’s Terry Anderson was then fouled and made one of two free throws, setting the final margin at 75-71. A last-second driving layup by UNC Asheville’s Kameron Taylor accounted for the final score as time expired.
Solomon, a 6-foot-9 forward from Enfield, North Carolina, was magnificent in defeat, carrying the Bulldogs with 30 points and 13 rebounds over 39 minutes. He was supported by Wright, who added 16 points, and Kameron Taylor, who also scored 16.
High Point’s victory was a balanced effort, keyed by its star guard Terry Anderson. He led the Panthers with 25 points and 12 rebounds, consistently attacking the basket. Martin, a 5-10 guard from St. Louis, Missouri, provided 18 points and five assists, while Washington contributed 14 points and five rebounds.
The statistical sheet underscored High Point’s efficient, opportunistic style. Both teams had 68 possessions, but the Panthers posted an offensive rating of 109.6 points per 100 possessions, outperforming the Bulldogs’ 103.8. High Point shot 45.6% from the field (26 of 57) and connected on 8 of 27 three-point attempts. UNC Asheville shot 42.9% (24 of 56) but managed only 5 of 18 from beyond the arc.
A significant disparity came in ball movement and defense. High Point recorded nine assists and nine steals, while UNC Asheville managed just two assists and two steals. The Panthers also won the battle in the paint, 36-34, and capitalized more effectively on turnovers.
The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ previous meeting on Feb. 19, a 74-48 High Point rout. This time, the Bulldogs, coming off an overtime win against Longwood, displayed far more resilience, largely due to Solomon’s dominant interior play. However, High Point’s depth, transition offense, and timely defensive plays in the final minutes proved the difference, allowing them to escape and maintain their position atop the conference standings as the postseason approaches.
