Tennessee-Martin vs. Tennessee State
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a decisive Ohio Valley Conference clash that doubled as a rubber match for the season series, Tennessee State used a dominant first-half performance to establish control and never looked back, defeating Tennessee-Martin 68-55 on Friday night at Ford Center.
The Tigers, improving to 22-9 overall, avenged a prior loss to the Skyhawks just a week earlier and secured a critical conference victory behind a game-high 19 points from guard Aaron Nkrumah. Tennessee-Martin, which had won a narrow contest against Eastern Illinois the night before, fell to 22-11 with the loss.
From the opening tip, the Tigers imposed their will. After Tennessee-Martin’s Andrija Bukumirović opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, Tennessee State responded with a 13-2 run, fueled by the backcourt duo of Nkrumah and Travis Harper. Nkrumah, a 6-foot-6 guard from Worcester, Massachusetts, showcased his scoring versatility with pull-up jumpers and drives, while Harper connected from deep, staking the Tigers to an early double-digit lead they would not relinquish.
The first half was defined by Tennessee State’s defensive intensity and Tennessee-Martin’s offensive struggles. The Skyhawks committed 10 turnovers before halftime and shot poorly from the perimeter, allowing the Tigers to build a commanding 36-28 lead at the break. Tennessee State’s interior presence, led by 6-foot-9 forward Antoine Lorick of Augusta, Georgia, was pivotal. Lorick contributed 13 points, two assists and two blocks, providing a consistent secondary scoring option and rim protector that disrupted the Skyhawks’ attack.
The most important stretch of the game came early in the second half, effectively extinguishing any hopes of a Skyhawks comeback. Tennessee State opened the period with a 6-0 burst, extending their lead to 14 points. A key sequence saw Lorick steal the ball and finish with a powerful dunk, forcing a Tennessee-Martin timeout just over two minutes into the half. The Skyhawks could never cut the deficit to single digits thereafter, as every attempted run was answered by the Tigers.
Tennessee-Martin’s offense found occasional sparks from Bukumirović, the 6-foot-7 forward from Sjenica, Serbia, who led his team with 17 points. Guard Filip Petkovski of Kranj, Slovenia, added 11 points and three assists, but the Skyhawks lacked the sustained firepower to challenge the Tigers’ lead. Tennessee State’s defense held firm, particularly on the perimeter, contesting shots and generating 14 total turnovers.
While the Skyhawks showed brief flashes, including a pair of third-quarter 3-pointers from guard Afan Trnka of Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina, that briefly energized their bench, Tennessee State always had a response. Nkrumah and point guard Dante Harris of Washington, D.C., who dished out four assists, expertly managed the game’s tempo, ensuring the Tigers maintained a comfortable working margin throughout the final 15 minutes.
The victory solidifies Tennessee State’s position near the top of the OVC standings as the regular season concludes, while Tennessee-Martin will look to regroup before the conference tournament. The Tigers’ balanced attack, which also saw Harper finish with 14 points, proved too much for a Skyhawks team playing its second game in as many nights.
The game’s total points, 123, fell well under the pregame over/under line of 140.5, a testament to the defensive focus exhibited, particularly by the victorious Tigers.
