Gardner-Webb vs. High Point

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Interstat) — The High Point Panthers, one of the nation’s winningest teams, methodically dispatched the struggling Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs 81-59 in a Big South Conference men’s basketball game Friday afternoon at the ETSU Athletic Center.

The game was never in doubt as the Panthers, who improved to 28-4 overall, built a commanding 43-27 halftime lead and maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half. The loss dropped Gardner-Webb to 4-29 on the season, continuing a difficult campaign.

High Point established its dominance early and decisively. The most important stretch of the game came in the opening minutes, where the Panthers set a physical and efficient tone from which Gardner-Webb never recovered. After winning the opening tip, High Point scored the game’s first seven points, capped by a Scotty Washington three-pointer off an assist from Owen Aquino. Gardner-Webb, plagued by turnovers and missed shots, did not score until a Jacob Hogarth layup nearly four minutes into the contest, by which time High Point led 10-2.

That initial burst was a microcosm of the entire evening. High Point’s defense was disruptive, forcing three early Gardner-Webb turnovers, while their offense executed with precision. The Panthers extended their lead to 16-4 just over five minutes into the game following another three-pointer from Braden Hausen, forcing a Gardner-Webb timeout. The Runnin’ Bulldogs showed brief flashes, with a Spence Sims three-pointer cutting the deficit to nine points at 16-7, but High Point responded with relentless consistency. A 9-2 run, featuring five points from Terry Anderson, pushed the lead to 25-9, and the Panthers cruised into halftime with a 16-point cushion.

The second half offered no dramatic shift. High Point opened with a 5-0 spurt to extend its lead to 21 points, and while Gardner-Webb occasionally trimmed the margin to around 15, the Panthers always had an answer. A key sequence midway through the half sealed the outcome. With High Point leading 60-52, the Panthers unleashed a 13-2 run over a four-minute span. The surge included a driving layup by Scotty Washington, a steal and dunk by Owen Aquino, and a critical three-pointer from Spence Sims for Gardner-Webb that was immediately negated by a Rob Martin layup and free throws. The run culminated with a Rob Martin floating jumper, giving High Point a commanding 73-54 lead with just over four minutes remaining, effectively ending any remote hope of a Gardner-Webb comeback.

High Point’s victory was a balanced and efficient effort, reflecting their status as a conference powerhouse. They dominated the interior, outscoring Gardner-Webb 42-26 in the paint, and capitalized on mistakes, scoring 13 points off turnovers. The Panthers also shared the ball effectively, recording 18 assists on their 31 made field goals.

Scotty Washington led all scorers with 19 points for High Point. Rob Martin provided a significant spark off the bench with 16 points, while Terry Anderson orchestrated the offense with 13 points and a game-high six assists. Braden Hausen added 14 points, and Owen Aquino contributed 10 points, three assists, and two blocks in a strong all-around performance.

Gardner-Webb was led by Jacob Hudson, who fought hard for 19 points in 38 minutes of action. Spence Sims added 12 points, and Jacob Hogarth chipped in nine points. The Runnin’ Bulldogs struggled with their offensive rhythm throughout, particularly from beyond the arc, and were unable to string together enough stops to mount a serious challenge.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 1, was part of the Big South Conference schedule. High Point entered as a heavy favorite according to national metrics and covered the pregame spread with ease. The total points scored, 140, fell well under the projected over/under line.

The result continued a starkly divergent trajectory for the two programs this season. High Point, with its 28-4 record, solidified its position as a top contender heading into the conference tournament. For Gardner-Webb, the search for consistency and positive momentum continues after a season marked by frequent defeats. The Panthers have now won 12 consecutive games against the Runnin’ Bulldogs, including two decisive victories this season by a combined 46 points.
