Evansville Purple Aces vs. Northern Iowa Panthers
ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — In a gritty Missouri Valley Conference tournament clash defined by defense and a decisive closing run, the Northern Iowa Panthers outlasted the Evansville Purple Aces 68-59 on Thursday night at Enterprise Center.
The game, played before a crowd of 8,960, saw the Panthers overcome a halftime deficit and a stellar individual performance from Evansville’s AJ Casey to advance, improving their season record to 20-12. Evansville’s challenging season concludes at 7-25.
The contest was a defensive struggle from the outset, with both teams forcing difficult shots and committing turnovers. The first half was a tense, back-and-forth affair featuring 10 lead changes. Evansville, led by the hot shooting of Leif Moeller and Trent Hundley from beyond the arc, managed to carve out a narrow 36-35 lead at the break. Moeller, a freshman from Berlin, Germany, scored 11 of his 15 points before halftime, while Hundley added nine.
Northern Iowa’s offense, however, was kept afloat by the interior presence of Will Hornseth, who scored 11 first-half points, and the timely shooting of Trey Campbell.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with neither team able to establish more than a two-possession lead for the first 14 minutes. The game’s pivotal moment arrived with the score tied at 57 and just over seven minutes remaining. From there, Northern Iowa’s defense clamped down, and its offense executed with precision to engineer the game-winning surge.
The most important sequence of the game began with Evansville’s Casey, who finished with a game-high 23 points, committing a traveling violation. On the ensuing possession, Campbell, who matched Casey with 23 points of his own, sank a pull-up jumper to put the Panthers ahead for good at 59-57 with 3:21 left.
Evansville’s offense, which had shown resilience throughout, then completely stalled under Northern Iowa’s intensified defensive pressure. The Purple Aces went scoreless for a critical stretch of over five minutes, missing their next seven field goal attempts and committing two turnovers.
Northern Iowa capitalized on every opportunity. Following a stop, Tristan Smith finished a tough layup inside. After another Evansville miss, Leon Bond threw down a powerful dunk off a feed from Smith, extending the lead to 63-57. Campbell then delivered the final blow, stripping the ball from Casey and converting a fast-break layup to cap a 10-0 run and put the Panthers up 65-57 with just over a minute to play.
Evansville’s drought finally ended on a Leif Moeller layup with 9 seconds left, but by then the outcome was sealed. Northern Iowa’s Max Weisbrod iced the game with a pair of free throws to provide the final margin.
The Panthers’ victory was a testament to balanced scoring and defensive execution down the stretch. Alongside Campbell’s 23 points, Hornseth finished with 13 points and three assists, while Smith provided a crucial 10 points, four assists, and relentless energy. Bond also chipped in 10 points and was a force defensively with three blocks.
For Evansville, Casey’s 23-point effort on 39 minutes was the standout performance, supplemented by 15 points from Moeller and 14 from Hundley. But the Purple Aces ultimately could not withstand Northern Iowa’s late-game run, shooting poorly from the floor and failing to find answers in the closing minutes.
According to the Interstat ELO system, Northern Iowa was projected with a 90.2% probability to win. The combined score of 127 points fell under the pregame over/under line of 125.5.
Northern Iowa advances to face Illinois State on Friday. The Panthers swept the season series from Evansville, having also won the two regular-season meetings in January.
