North Florida vs. West Georgia

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a game defined by offensive efficiency and a dominant individual performance, the West Georgia Wolves outlasted the North Florida Ospreys 93-85 in an ASUN Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.

The victory, played before an announced crowd of 690, improved West Georgia to 15-16 overall, while North Florida fell to 7-25.

The most critical phase of the contest was its opening act. West Georgia established control early with a blistering offensive display, building a double-digit lead in the first half that North Florida spent the remainder of the game trying to overcome. The Wolves shot 53.2% from the field in the opening period, connecting on 6 of 13 three-point attempts, to take a 48-35 lead into halftime. This cushion proved vital as the Ospreys mounted a persistent second-half challenge.

West Georgia’s offense was powered by the standout play of Shelton Williams-Dryden. The junior from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, scored 27 points on 12-of-18 shooting, consistently attacking the rim and converting in the paint. He was complemented by a sharp-shooting effort from Josh Smith of Chicago, who added 25 points, including five three-pointers. The Wolves’ backcourt duo combined for 52 points, providing a steady scoring punch that countered every North Florida rally.

North Florida’s effort was led by a heroic performance from guard Kamrin Oriol. The St. Petersburg native poured in 28 points, dished out four assists, and played 40 minutes in a relentless attempt to will his team to victory. Kent Jackson, a local product from Jacksonville, added 19 points, while Mason Lee and Dalton Gayman chipped in 11 and 12 points, respectively.

Despite the Ospreys’ resolve, the Wolves’ superior execution and ball security were decisive. West Georgia committed only five turnovers, a stark contrast to North Florida’s 11. The Wolves also capitalized on their possessions with remarkable efficiency, posting an offensive rating of 129.3 points per 100 possessions. North Florida, while scoring 50 points in the second half and finishing with an offensive rating of 109.8, could never fully close the gap established in the first half.

North Florida narrowed the deficit to single digits multiple times in the final period, but West Georgia consistently answered. A key sequence occurred late when, after an Oriol three-pointer cut the Wolves’ lead to 86-83 with 28 seconds remaining, West Georgia sealed the game at the free-throw line. The Wolves made 7 of 8 free throws in the final 32 seconds to secure the eight-point victory.

The game was a reversal of the teams’ last meeting on Feb. 5, which North Florida won 81-73 in Carrollton, Georgia. This result also defied some pregame metrics, as the total score of 178 points sailed over the posted over/under line of 158, though West Georgia covered the spread as a 3.5-point favorite.

West Georgia’s Shelton Williams-Dryden continued a strong late-season surge, following up recent performances of 30 and 24 points. For North Florida, the loss extended a difficult season, though the Ospreys showed fight in their final home game.

West Georgia concludes its regular season on Friday against Queens (N.C.) at this neutral site in Jacksonville. North Florida’s season is complete.
