Eastern Illinois vs. SIU Edwardsville
EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — In a gritty, back-and-forth Ohio Valley Conference Tournament clash defined by resilience and revenge, the Eastern Illinois Panthers outlasted the SIU Edwardsville Cougars 77-71 in overtime Wednesday night at the Ford Center.
The victory, secured before an announced crowd of 929, avenged a lopsided 27-point loss to the same Cougars team just five days prior and snapped a two-game skid for the Panthers, who improved to 13-19. SIU Edwardsville, which entered as a heavy favorite according to advanced metrics, saw its season end at 19-13.
The game’s defining sequence unfolded not in the frantic final seconds of regulation, but in the suffocating defensive effort of the extra period. After SIU Edwardsville’s Arnas Sakenis opened overtime scoring with a putback and a free throw to give the Cougars a 67-65 lead, Eastern Illinois locked down. The Panthers held SIU Edwardsville without a field goal for the entire five-minute overtime, limiting them to just two more free throws while forcing critical misses and turnovers.
Eastern Illinois, which had squandered a nine-point halftime lead and needed a Kooper Jacobi layup with 24 seconds left in overtime to finally pull ahead for good, found its separation at the foul line. Zion Fruster, who led all scorers with 23 points, hit a crucial free throw in the final seconds to extend the lead, capping a 12-6 overtime domination where the Cougars shot 0-for-6 from the floor.
The contest was a tale of contrasting strengths. SIU Edwardsville relied on the three-pointer, making 12 of 30 attempts, with Tyler King scoring 19 points and Jordan Pickett adding 12 off the bench. The Cougars also dominated the offensive glass, grabbing 15 rebounds to Eastern Illinois’s six, which helped them overcome a poor 37.1% overall shooting night.
Eastern Illinois countered with superior efficiency inside the arc and disruptive defense. The Panthers shot 50.8% from the field on 31-of-61 shooting, assisted on nine of their baskets compared to just five for SIU Edwardsville, and recorded nine steals. Jacobi was a constant force with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Terry McMorris provided a vital interior presence with 15 points, three blocks, and several key defensive stands.
The Panthers stormed out to a 40-31 halftime lead behind hot shooting, but the Cougars methodically chipped away in the second half. Their defense tightened, and their three-point shooting kept them in touch. A King three-pointer with two minutes left in regulation gave SIU Edwardsville a 63-60 lead, its first since the opening minutes. Eastern Illinois clawed back, with Fruster tying the game at 65 on a floating jumper with 2:29 left. Both teams had chances to win in the final two minutes but were plagued by empty possessions and turnovers, sending the game to an extra session tied.
In overtime, Eastern Illinois’s defensive intensity reached another level. Sakenis, who finished with 15 points, three blocks, and a game-high seven offensive rebounds, fouled out with 50 seconds left, depleting the Cougars’ interior. The Panthers capitalized, scoring the final seven points of the game from the free-throw line to seal a hard-fought and unexpected tournament victory.
The Panthers advance to face Tennessee-Martin on Thursday, continuing their postseason run in Evansville. For SIU Edwardsville, a season that saw them finish second in the OVC regular-season standings ends abruptly with a second consecutive overtime loss to their in-state rival, having also fallen in OT at Eastern Illinois back in December.
