Jacksonville vs. Bellarmine
(Interstat) — In a tense ASUN Conference clash that came down to the final possession, the Bellarmine Knights survived a furious second-half rally from the Jacksonville Dolphins to secure an 82-79 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena.
The game’s defining sequence, and its most important part, unfolded in the closing seconds with the outcome hanging in the balance. Trailing by a single point with 14 seconds remaining, Bellarmine’s Brian Waddell delivered a crucial dunk off an assist from Tyler Doyle, pushing the Knights ahead 80-78. Jacksonville, after using a full timeout, attempted to answer, but Hayden Wood’s turnaround jumper missed the mark. Sam Donald secured the defensive rebound for Bellarmine and was immediately fouled.
With just two seconds on the clock, Donald calmly sank both free throws to extend the Knights’ lead to 82-78. Jacksonville’s last-gasp attempt, a three-point field goal from Chris Lockett as time expired, was off target, sealing the hard-fought road win for Bellarmine.
The contest was a tale of two contrasting halves, largely dictated by the offensive prowess of Bellarmine’s Jack Karasinski. The 6-foot-7 forward from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was virtually unstoppable in the first period, scoring 23 of his game-high 31 points. He propelled the Knights to a commanding 47-32 halftime advantage, showcasing a versatile arsenal with three-pointers, drives, and free throws. Karasinski’s performance continued a remarkable scoring surge, following games of 38, 23, and 31 points in his last three outings.
However, the Dolphins, playing on their home floor, refused to capitulate. They emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity and a more efficient offensive rhythm. Led by the backcourt duo of Hayden Wood and Chris Lockett, Jacksonville methodically chipped away at the substantial deficit. Wood, a 6-foot-4 guard from Springdale, Arkansas, finished with 23 points, while Lockett, from New Orleans, added 22. Their persistent scoring, combined with the playmaking of Jaylen Jones who dished out seven assists, fueled a 47-point second half for the Dolphins.
Jacksonville’s relentless push saw them draw even and then briefly take the lead late in the game, setting the stage for the dramatic final minute. Bellarmine, which had seen its offensive flow stagnate after halftime, managed to execute when it mattered most. Alongside Karasinski’s stellar afternoon, the Knights received vital contributions from Brian Waddell with 15 points and the backcourt pairing of Tyler Doyle and Kenyon Goodin. Doyle matched Jones with seven assists and added 14 points, while Goodin chipped in 11.
The victory improved Bellarmine’s overall record to 13-18, while Jacksonville fell to 12-20. The game was a rematch of a January 22 meeting, also won by Bellarmine 77-70. This result defied the pregame statistical projections which slightly favored the Dolphins.
Ultimately, the Knights’ early dominance, spearheaded by Karasinski’s explosive first half, provided the cushion necessary to withstand Jacksonville’s valiant comeback. Yet, the most critical segment was the final 14 seconds, where Bellarmine’s composure under pressure—highlighted by Waddell’s dunk and Donald’s clutch free throws—transformed a one-point nail-biter into a three-point victory.
