Morgan State at South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by contrasting offensive philosophies, the Morgan State Bears rode a historic shooting performance from beyond the arc and a career-high scoring night from guard Alfred Worrell to outlast the South Carolina State Bulldogs 90-83 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball clash Wednesday night at SHM Memorial Center.

The victory improved Morgan State to 12-14 overall, while South Carolina State fell to 7-20.

The decisive factor was a stark disparity in three-point efficiency. Morgan State, despite attempting 20 fewer field goals overall, connected on 12 of 20 attempts from three-point range, a blistering 60 percent clip. South Carolina State, conversely, managed only 3 of 15 from deep, a 20 percent rate that proved insurmountable despite a more prolific night inside the arc. The Bears also capitalized at the free-throw line, making 28 of 34 attempts compared to the Bulldogs’ 18 of 29.

Worrell, a 6-foot-2 guard from Washington, D.C., was the catalyst for the Bears. He poured in a game-high 23 points in just 33 minutes, showcasing his efficiency by drawing fouls and converting at the line. His backcourt mate, Elijah Davis of Severn, Maryland, orchestrated the offense with a game-high 10 assists over 40 minutes of action.

The Bulldogs countered with a balanced inside attack. Christopher Parker of Columbia, South Carolina, led the team with 19 points, while Teon Tindal of Sumter, South Carolina, added 14 points and two blocks. Noah Treadwell of Atlanta contributed 16 points and four assists, and point guard Jayden Johnson of Brooklyn, New York, facilitated with 11 points and seven assists. Cameron Clark of Gwinnett, Georgia, provided an interior presence with 11 points.

The game’s most critical sequence unfolded late in the second half as South Carolina State mounted a fierce comeback. After trailing by as many as 11 points, the Bulldogs chipped away, closing to within 77-74 on a Noah Treadwell three-pointer with 2:43 remaining. The SHM Memorial Center crowd of 375 grew energized as the home team threatened.

Morgan State’s response was immediate and decisive. On the ensuing possession, Eugene Alvin, a 6-foot-7 forward from Fort Myers, Florida, drained a crucial three-pointer off an assist from Davis to push the lead back to six. After a defensive stop, the Bears worked the clock before Christian Meeks found Alvin again for another three-pointer, extending the advantage to 83-77 with just 41 seconds left.

Alvin, who finished with 20 points on 5-of-7 shooting in only 16 minutes off the bench, provided the knockout blows. His back-to-back triples in the final three minutes stifled the Bulldogs’ momentum and effectively sealed the outcome. South Carolina State was forced to foul, and Morgan State’s steady free-throw shooting down the stretch prevented any last-minute drama.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, with Morgan State taking a narrow 42-40 lead into the break. The Bears built their lead in the second half by maintaining their scorching perimeter shooting while limiting their turnovers after the intermission.

Despite being out-rebounded 40-28 and allowing 13 offensive boards, Morgan State’s superior shot-making from distance and the charity stripe carried the day. The Bears finished with an offensive rating of 126.5 points per 100 possessions, a mark of high efficiency, while the Bulldogs posted a 114.1 rating.

Rob Lawson of Capitol Heights, Maryland, added 14 points for Morgan State, which won its second straight game. The Bulldogs were led by Parker’s 19 points but saw a two-game home winning streak snapped.

Morgan State next hosts Howard on Saturday. South Carolina State travels to face Maryland-Eastern Shore, also on Saturday.
