High Point Overwhelms Gardner-Webb in Big South Rout
SHELBY, N.C. (Interstat) — In a display of offensive firepower that overwhelmed the Big South Conference’s basement dweller, the High Point Panthers extended their winning streak and tightened their grip on first place with a decisive 112-87 victory over the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at Paul Porter Arena.
The game was effectively decided in a blistering first-half stretch where High Point’s efficiency and defensive intensity created an insurmountable gap. Leading just 14-11 near the midway point of the opening period, the Panthers unleashed a 19-1 run over a span of four minutes and 26 seconds that transformed a competitive contest into a rout. The surge was fueled by a relentless attack from beyond the arc and at the rim, typifying the Panthers’ balanced and potent offense.
High Point, which entered the game with a 96% probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, improved to 24-4 overall and remained atop the conference standings. Gardner-Webb, struggling through a difficult season, fell to 3-24.
The Panthers’ offensive clinic was led by a committee of scorers. Rob Martin, a 5-foot-10 guard from St. Louis, led all scorers with 21 points, consistently breaking down the defense. Terry Anderson added 17 points, while Owen Aquino, the 6-foot-8 forward from Madrid, Spain, posted a stat-stuffing line of 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots in just 30 minutes. Cam’Ron Fletcher contributed 13 points and Scotty Washington had 10 points and seven rebounds.
For Gardner-Webb, Jacob Hudson of Houston provided a bright spot with a team-high 20 points. Ace Talbert scored 17 and Colin Hawkins added 15, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs could not match High Point’s pace or shot-making.
The statistical disparity told the story of the lopsided affair. High Point shot 54.5% from the field, connecting on 14 of 37 three-point attempts, and was nearly flawless from the free throw line, making 26 of 29. Gardner-Webb shot a respectable 57.4% overall but attempted 12 fewer field goals, hampered by 15 turnovers and a significant rebounding disadvantage. High Point dominated the glass with 13 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second-chance points, and their defense tallied eight steals and seven blocks.
The Panthers also excelled in transition, outscoring Gardner-Webb 20-10 in fastbreak points, a testament to their defensive pressure and ability to capitalize on mistakes.
High Point took a 48-37 lead into halftime and only expanded it after the break, scoring 64 points in the second half. The Panthers’ offensive rating of 137.0 points per 100 possessions underscored an exceptionally efficient performance, while Gardner-Webb’s rating of 115.5 was rendered ineffective by the Panthers’ own prolific scoring.
The victory continues a dominant run for High Point, which has now won 12 of its last 13 games. The Panthers have also won both meetings with Gardner-Webb this season by a combined 79 points, having previously defeated the Runnin’ Bulldogs 104-49 on Jan. 7.
Gardner-Webb, which has lost five straight, was unable to protect its home court in front of an announced crowd of 435. The Runnin’ Bulldogs will look to regroup on the road at Charleston Southern on Tuesday.
High Point, meanwhile, will prepare for a pivotal conference homestand next week, hosting UNC Asheville on Thursday and Winthrop on Saturday as they continue their pursuit of the Big South regular-season title.
