Akron Outlasts Massachusetts in High-Scoring MAC Showdown

AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering disparity at the free throw line, the Akron Zips outlasted the Massachusetts Minutemen 99-92 in a high-octane Mid-American Conference men’s basketball clash Friday night at James A. Rhodes Arena.

The victory, witnessed by a crowd of 2,125, improved Akron’s record to 18-5 overall, while Massachusetts fell to 15-11.

The most decisive factor in the contest was Akron’s relentless parade to the charity stripe. The Zips attempted 43 free throws, converting 38, while Massachusetts had only 17 attempts, making 11. This 27-point advantage from the line proved insurmountable for the Minutemen, who otherwise shot a blistering 57.4% from the field (35 of 61) and 45.8% from three-point range (11 of 24). Akron countered with efficient, if less frequent, shooting, hitting 46.3% from the floor (25 of 54) and 36.7% from deep (11 of 30).

The game’s pivotal stretch arrived late in the second half with the outcome still in doubt. Leading 86-84 with just over five minutes remaining, Akron engineered a critical 8-0 run that effectively sealed the victory. The surge was fueled by the Zips’ hallmark: defensive pressure leading to free throws. After a Massachusetts turnover, Akron’s Amani Lyles drew a foul and sank two free throws. Following a Minutemen miss, Shammah Scott drilled a three-pointer off an assist from Sharron Young. On the ensuing possession, Lyles was fouled again and hit two more from the line, pushing the Akron lead to 94-84 with 2:25 to play. Massachusetts, despite a valiant offensive effort, could not cut the deficit below five points the rest of the way.

Akron’s backcourt duo of Tavari Johnson and Shammah Scott spearheaded the attack. Johnson, a junior from La Grange Park, Illinois, played 36 minutes and led all scorers with 23 points, adding four assists. Scott, a Cleveland native, provided 14 points off the bench, including three crucial three-pointers. The Zips’ frontcourt was anchored by Amani Lyles of Columbus, Ohio, who scored 19 points, and Evan Mahaffey of Cincinnati, who contributed 11 points, several key steals, and disruptive defense.

Massachusetts was led by a balanced scoring effort. K’Jei Parker of Lakeland, Florida, came off the bench to score a team-high 20 points. Marcus Banks from Hampton, Virginia, added 18 points, while Italian forward Leonardo Bettiol of Roncade matched that total with 18 points of his own, primarily from inside the paint. Point guard Danny Carbuccia of White Plains, New York, directed the offense with 13 points and a game-high nine assists.

The first half was a tightly contested affair, featuring 10 lead changes. Akron held a narrow 44-43 edge at the break, a margin built largely on a 16-4 advantage in free throw attempts in the opening period. The second half saw the Zips gradually increase their efficiency and defensive intensity. They scored 55 points after halftime, fueled by 22 free throw attempts, and capitalized on Massachusetts mistakes, turning 10 Minutemen turnovers into 24 points. Akron also dominated in transition, outscoring UMass 26-12 on fast breaks.

Despite the loss, Massachusetts showcased a potent offense, posting an offensive rating of 113.5 points per 100 possessions. However, Akron’s offense was even more potent at 127.9, and their ability to generate high-percentage shots and frequent trips to the line made the difference. The Zips also won the turnover battle, committing 10 to Massachusetts’s 15, and held a 7-5 edge in steals.

The game’s result defied the pregame betting line, as Akron was favored by 13.5 points, but the combined score of 191 points soared over the over/under line of 159.5, reflecting the offensive outburst from both teams.

Massachusetts will look to rebound when it hosts Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday. Akron, solidifying its position in the MAC, hits the road for its next contest at Western Michigan, also on Tuesday.
