Alabama Outlasts Arkansas in Double-Overtime SEC Thriller

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Interstat) — In a Southeastern Conference showdown that defied statistical logic and exhausted all available oxygen in the building, the Alabama Crimson Tide outlasted the Arkansas Razorbacks 117-115 in a double-overtime epic on Wednesday night at a raucous Coleman Coliseum.

The game, a breathtaking display of offensive firepower and resilience, was not decided until the final seconds of the second extra period. It featured a combined 232 points, 83 made field goals, and a duel between two of the nation’s premier guards that will be recounted for years.

The most critical sequence unfolded in the waning moments of the second overtime. With Alabama clinging to a 114-112 lead, Arkansas’ Darius Acuff Jr. was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 1:31 remaining. The sophomore from Detroit, who had carried the Razorbacks all night, calmly sank all three free throws to give Arkansas a one-point lead, its first since late in regulation.

Alabama answered immediately. On the ensuing possession, Labaron Philon, the Crimson Tide’s own stellar guard, drove and kicked to Houston Mallette in the corner. Mallette, who had been quiet from deep, drained a 3-pointer to put Alabama back ahead 117-115 with 51 seconds left. Arkansas had two chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute. First, Trevon Brazile threw down a powerful dunk off a miss to make it 117-115, but the Razorbacks needed a stop. They got one when Philon’s driving layup was blocked by Brazile, giving Arkansas the ball with 16 seconds left.

Out of a timeout, the play designed for Acuff resulted in a contested floating jumper in the lane that missed. Malique Ewin secured the offensive rebound but his hurried putback dunk attempt rattled out. Ewin grabbed the miss again but his second effort also failed to fall as the horn sounded, finally ending the marathon after nearly three hours of play.

The contest was a masterpiece of efficiency from the opening tip. Alabama shot a scorching 56.3% from the field, fueled by 58 points in the paint and a 27-for-34 performance at the free-throw line. Arkansas countered with torrential 3-point shooting, hitting 13 of 26 from beyond the arc, and committed only seven turnovers.

The individual battle between Acuff and Philon was the central drama. Acuff delivered a legendary performance for the visitors, pouring in 49 points while adding five assists and a block in 50 minutes. His backcourt mate, Meleek Thomas, added 24 points. For Alabama, Philon was magnificent, scoring 35 points and dishing out seven assists in 41 minutes, consistently answering Arkansas runs. He was supported by a dominant inside presence from Aiden Sherrell, who scored 26 points, and Amari Allen, who added 19 points and relentless defense.

The game seemed destined for a wild finish from the outset. Arkansas raced to a 57-47 halftime lead behind Acuff’s hot hand. Alabama methodically chipped away in the second half, finally drawing even and forcing the first overtime at 95-95 on a pair of Aden Holloway free throws with 18 seconds left. Acuff had a chance to win it in regulation, but his 3-point attempt in the final seconds was off target.

The first overtime was a tense, back-and-forth affair where both teams scored 10 points. The second overtime belonged to Alabama’s precision and Arkansas’ missed opportunities at the rim in the final seconds.

Both teams emerged with identical 19-7 overall records. The Crimson Tide improved to 10-3 in the SEC, while the Razorbacks fell to 9-4 in conference play.

The game was played well above the pregame over/under line of 181, a testament to the relentless offensive execution. Alabama, a 3.5-point pregame favorite, narrowly covered the spread in the most dramatic fashion possible, fulfilling its 77% win probability only after surviving two extra periods.

Arkansas will look to rebound at home against Missouri on Saturday. Alabama travels to face LSU, also on Saturday.
