Belmont’s Efficient Offense Overpowers Illinois State in MVC Matchup

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — A blistering offensive display by Belmont proved too much for Illinois State to overcome as the Bruins secured an 80-69 victory in a Missouri Valley Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Curb Events Center.

The game was decided by Belmont’s remarkable efficiency. The Bruins shot 58% from the field and 56% from three-point range, posting an offensive rating of 112.7 points per 100 possessions. Illinois State, despite winning the turnover battle and dominating the offensive glass with 13 rebounds, could not match that firepower, shooting just 38% overall.

The most important part of the game was a decisive second-half run by Belmont that extinguished Illinois State’s last significant push. After the Redbirds closed to within four points at 56-52 with just over 12 minutes remaining, the Bruins responded with a clinical 10-0 surge over the next three minutes. The run featured inside scoring from Sam Orme and Brigham Rogers, punctuated by a critical three-pointer from Eoin Dillon that pushed the lead to 66-52 and forced an Illinois State timeout. The Redbirds never got within single digits again.

Belmont’s balanced attack was led by Eoin Dillon of Peoria, Illinois, who scored 16 points. Jabez Jenkins added 14 points and Isaiah West controlled the tempo with eight assists. For Illinois State, Chase Walker posted 12 points and eight rebounds, while Johnny Kinziger scored 13 points and Ty Pence added 12.

The Bruins improved to 18-3 overall and continued their strong start to conference play. The Redbirds fell to 14-7.

From the opening tip, Belmont’s offensive execution set the tone. The Bruins hit nine of their first 14 shots, including three early three-pointers, to build a double-digit lead midway through the first half. Illinois State stayed within striking distance thanks to a 13-3 advantage in offensive rebounds, which generated multiple second-chance opportunities, and by converting 17 of 20 free throws.

However, the Redbirds’ own shooting struggles were a constant hindrance. They finished 8 of 28 from beyond the arc and could not sustain any offensive momentum to counter Belmont’s consistent scoring. Every time Illinois State strung together a few stops, the Bruins answered, often with a three-pointer to silence the rally.

The victory extends Belmont’s home court advantage and solidifies its position near the top of the conference standings. Illinois State, which had won two straight coming in, will look to regroup on the road.

Belmont next travels to face Valparaiso on Wednesday. Illinois State continues its road trip at Murray State, also on Wednesday.

The game’s final score surpassed the pregame over/under line of 149.5 points. Belmont entered as a 5.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks, a margin they covered with their late-game separation.
