Charleston Southern at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — Two teams riding opposite waves of momentum will meet when Longwood hosts Charleston Southern in a pivotal Big South Conference men’s basketball matchup Friday night at Willett Hall.

Both the Lancers and Buccaneers carry identical 11-10 overall records into the contest, but their recent paths have diverged sharply. Longwood (11-10) is coming off a dominant 91-56 home victory over Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, a performance that showcased its potential. Charleston Southern (11-10), meanwhile, has dropped four consecutive games, each by six points or fewer, including an 87-83 loss at Presbyterian on Wednesday.

The game features a compelling clash of standout players. Charleston Southern will lean on high-scoring guard A’lahn Sumler, who is averaging 23.4 points over his last seven games. Sumler poured in 35 points in a loss to USC Upstate on Jan. 14 and scored 26 with six assists in the midweek defeat at Presbyterian. Containing him will be a primary focus for the Lancers’ defense.

Longwood counters with forward Elijah Tucker, who is coming off a highly efficient 21-point performance in just 27 minutes against Gardner-Webb. Tucker also recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Presbyterian on Jan. 10, providing a consistent interior presence for the Lancers.

The Buccaneers’ recent skid has been defined by heartbreaking finishes, with three of the four losses coming in overtime or by a single possession. Finding a way to close a tight game will be paramount against a Longwood squad that has won two of its last three at home by an average of 20 points.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Longwood is projected as a significant favorite with a 75% probability to win. The Lancers will look to validate that projection and solidify their conference standing, while the Buccaneers are desperate to halt their slide and steal a critical road victory.

The rematch is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, in Charleston, S.C.
