Bearcats Upset Cyclones in Big 12 Showdown
CINCINNATI (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and opportunistic scoring, the Cincinnati Bearcats handed the Iowa State Cyclones their second loss of the season, 79-70, in a pivotal Big 12 Conference clash Saturday afternoon at a sold-out Fifth Third Arena.
The Bearcats, improving to 10-8 overall, used a stifling defense to fuel their transition game, overcoming a spectacular 34-point performance from Iowa State’s Milan Momcilovic. Cincinnati forced 12 Iowa State turnovers and converted them into 20 points, while also holding a decisive 13-2 advantage in fastbreak points. The Cyclones, who entered the game with a 16-1 record and a top-5 national ranking in defensive efficiency, found themselves on the wrong end of the hustle stats, a rarity for coach T.J. Otzelberger’s squad.
The game’s most important sequence came early in the second half, turning a narrow Cincinnati lead into a cushion the Cyclones could never erase. Leading 43-41 with just over 16 minutes to play, Cincinnati’s defense ignited a critical 9-0 run. It began with Day Day Thomas stripping Iowa State’s Tamin Lipsey and converting a layup. After a pair of Iowa State free throws, the Bearcats’ pressure forced another turnover, leading to a Jalen Celestine three-pointer. Another defensive stop was followed by a Tyler McKinley layup off a Celestine assist, pushing the lead to 52-43 and forcing an Iowa State timeout with 14:01 remaining.
This burst encapsulated the evening. Cincinnati, which had eight steals and four blocks, consistently turned defense into offense. Iowa State, meanwhile, managed only four assists against 12 turnovers, a telling statistic for a team that relies on ball movement and cohesion.
Momcilovic, the 6-foot-8 sophomore from Pewaukee, Wisconsin, was virtually unstoppable for long stretches, shooting 9 for 21 from the field and 6 for 13 from three-point range to go with his 34 points. His back-to-back three-pointers midway through the second half briefly brought Iowa State within four points, but Cincinnati always had an answer. Joshua Jefferson added 16 points for the Cyclones, but the supporting cast struggled against Cincinnati’s active, lengthy defenders.
The Bearcats were led by Thomas, who scored 19 points and had three steals. His backcourt mate, Jizzle James, provided 15 points off the bench, while Sencire Harris energized the home crowd with 12 points, two assists, a block, and relentless defensive activity. Cincinnati’s Baba Miller, the 6-foot-11 forward from Spain, was a defensive anchor with four assists, two blocks, and two steals, facilitating the offense from the high post.
Iowa State shot a respectable 43.1% from the field and 42.9% from three-point range but was hampered by 17 missed free throws, going 17 of 27 from the line. Cincinnati, though shooting a lower percentage overall, was more efficient with its possessions, committing only seven turnovers and making 9 of 12 free throws.
The loss drops Iowa State to 16-2 overall and marks its second defeat in three games after a 15-0 start. The Cyclones, who were installed as 6.5-point favorites, will look to rebound at home against UCF on Tuesday. Cincinnati, which entered the game with a sub-.500 record, secured a signature win for coach Wes Miller’s program as it navigates its second season in the Big 12. The Bearcats travel to face Arizona on Wednesday.
The total points scored, 149, went under the pregame over/under line of 138.5. A crowd of 10,551 witnessed the upset, which saw Cincinnati outperform its pregame win probability of just 20.5% according to Interstat’s ELO system.
