Lafayette Dominates Holy Cross in Patriot League Matchup
EASTON, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive pressure and opportunistic offense, the Lafayette Leopards delivered a decisive 74-55 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders in Patriot League men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center.
Lafayette, improving to 5-13 overall, used a dominant first-half run to seize control and never relented, capitalizing on a staggering advantage in points off turnovers to secure the win. Holy Cross fell to 8-11 with the loss.
The most critical sequence of the contest unfolded midway through the first half, transforming a tight game into a commanding Lafayette lead. With Holy Cross trailing just 9-7 after a Joe Nugent layup and free throw at the 12:48 mark, the Leopards unleashed a 12-0 burst over the next two and a half minutes that effectively decided the contest’s trajectory.
The run was fueled by stifling defense and efficient transition play. It began immediately after the media timeout, as Lafayette’s Mark Butler converted a driving layup while being fouled and completed the three-point play. Following a Holy Cross turnover, freshman KaiMani Murdock, who had just entered the game, drained a three-pointer from the wing. After another Crusader giveaway, Murdock struck again from beyond the arc, pushing the lead to 19-7 and forcing a Holy Cross timeout with 10:13 remaining in the half.
This explosive stretch highlighted the game’s defining themes: Holy Cross’s offensive struggles and Lafayette’s ability to convert mistakes into points. The Crusaders committed 11 turnovers, which the Leopards converted into 21 points. Conversely, Lafayette’s disciplined play resulted in only five turnovers, leading to just three Holy Cross points. The Leopards also dominated inside, outscoring Holy Cross 38-22 in the paint and securing 15 offensive rebounds to Holy Cross’s six.
Andrew Phillips led all scorers for Lafayette with 19 points, showcasing a versatile inside-out game. Caleb Williams added 16 points and four assists, while Shareef Jackson provided a formidable interior presence with 15 points, nine rebounds, and two assists. Jackson’s early block set a physical tone for the Leopards’ defense.
Holy Cross was led by Tyler Boston’s 18 points, with Joe Nugent contributing 16. However, the Crusaders’ offense never found a consistent rhythm, shooting just 35.3% from the field and 25% from three-point range. Their offensive rating of 84.0 on 66 possessions underscored a afternoon of inefficient execution.
Lafayette built a 37-27 halftime lead and maintained that 10-point margin throughout the second half, matching Holy Cross’s 28-point output after the break. Any attempt by the Crusaders to mount a comeback was stymied by Lafayette’s steady offense, which answered every Holy Cross basket and continued to exploit its advantages in transition and on the glass.
The Leopards finished the game shooting 41.3% from the field and 35% from three, while also making 15 of 24 free throws. Holy Cross went 14 for 20 from the line. The game’s total attendance was 679.
Both teams continue Patriot League play next Wednesday. Holy Cross travels to face Navy, while Lafayette visits Boston University.
