Massachusetts at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. (Interstat) — Two teams on the fringe of postseason contention will look to bolster their resumes when the Massachusetts Minutemen visit the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers in a nonconference men’s basketball matchup Saturday at HTC Center.

Massachusetts (15-9) enters riding a two-game winning streak after a 95-89 victory over Central Michigan on Tuesday. The Minutemen are led by high-scoring guard Marcus Banks, who erupted for a career-high 37 points in that win. Over his last eight games, Banks is averaging 18.5 points, showcasing his role as the offensive catalyst. He will be supported by Danny Carbuccia, who dished out 17 assists against Central Michigan, and forward Daniel Hankins-Sanford.

Coastal Carolina (14-11) looks to rebound from a 70-66 home loss to Arkansas State on Wednesday. The Chanticleers are paced by versatile guard RaSheed Jones, who nearly posted a triple-double with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a win over Louisiana-Monroe on Feb. 1. Jones averages 13.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game this season, serving as the primary facilitator for an offense that has topped 80 points in four of its last seven contests.

The game represents a key opportunity for both squads to add a quality win outside their respective leagues. Massachusetts, out of the Mid-American Conference, has shown resilience in close games, with a 4-2 record in contests decided by three points or fewer. Coastal Carolina, from the Sun Belt, is 9-4 at home this season but has dropped two of its last three at HTC Center.

The Minutemen will aim to control the tempo behind Banks’ scoring and Carbuccia’s distribution. The Chanticleers will counter with Jones’ all-around play and look for support from Joshua Beadle (16 points vs. Arkansas State) and Reggie Hill. The outcome may hinge on which team can better execute in the final minutes of what projects to be a tightly contested battle.
