Appalachian State Holds Off Eastern Michigan in Tight Contest
BOONE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by grinding defense and missed opportunities, Appalachian State held off a persistent Eastern Michigan squad for a 65-60 victory in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at Holmes Center.
The Mountaineers, who improved to 17-9 overall, never trailed after the opening minutes but could never fully shake the Eagles, who fell to 9-14. The contest was a stark contrast in styles, with Appalachian State leveraging its interior presence and transition game, while Eastern Michigan relied on a methodical, albeit less efficient, offensive approach.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the final chaotic minute. With Appalachian State clinging to a 62-60 lead after Eastern Michigan’s Braelon Green connected on a three-pointer, the Eagles were forced to foul. The Mountaineers’ Alonzo Dodd, the game’s standout performer, was sent to the line with 36 seconds remaining. He coolly sank the first free throw but missed the second, keeping the door slightly ajar for Eastern Michigan.
On the ensuing possession, the Eagles worked the ball inside to Mohammad Habhab, whose layup attempt was blocked by Appalachian State’s Michael Marcus with 46 seconds left. The Eagles retained possession, but a hurried three-point attempt by Jon Sanders missed. After a scramble for the rebound, Eastern Michigan’s Addison Patterson was fouled on a put-back attempt with 23 seconds left, but the basket did not count as the foul was called before the shot.
That pivotal defensive stand by the Mountaineers effectively sealed the outcome. Dodd returned to the line with 21 seconds left and made one of two free throws for a 64-60 lead. Eastern Michigan’s final chance evaporated when Sanders missed another three, and Dodd iced the game with one final free throw in the closing seconds.
The game was a struggle for both teams offensively. Appalachian State shot just 39% from the field and a paltry 19% from three-point range. Eastern Michigan was only marginally better, shooting 39.7% from the floor and 27.3% from deep. The difference came at the foul line and in the paint. The Mountaineers attempted 28 free throws, making 15, compared to just six attempts for the Eagles, who made four. Appalachian State also dominated points in the paint, 38-24, and scored 12 fastbreak points to Eastern Michigan’s zero.
Alonzo Dodd led all scorers with 23 points for Appalachian State, adding five assists. His clutch free throws down the stretch capped a strong all-around performance. Luke Wilson provided a crucial double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Eren Banks and Kasen Jennings each added 10 points.
For Eastern Michigan, Mohammad Habhab recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, also contributing six assists and two blocks. Addison Patterson matched Habhab’s 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Jon Sanders finished with 12 points.
Appalachian State built its largest lead of the first half, 36-30, after a three-pointer from Eren Banks just before the break. The Mountaineers maintained a slim advantage throughout the second half, but the Eagles stayed within one possession multiple times, thanks largely to their work on the offensive glass and a defense that limited Appalachian State to 29 second-half points.
The win extends Appalachian State’s streak to four games as they continue a strong stretch in Sun Belt Conference play. Eastern Michigan, competing as an independent, has now lost three straight games, each by six points or fewer.
A crowd of 1,870 at Holmes Center watched the defensive struggle, which fell under the projected total of 128.5 points. Appalachian State next travels to face Georgia Southern on Wednesday. Eastern Michigan continues its road schedule at Kent State on Wednesday.
