McNeese State Holds Off Lamar for Southland Conference Win
LAKE CHARLES, La. (Interstat) — The McNeese State Cowboys used a balanced offensive attack and a decisive second-half surge to pull away from the Lamar Cardinals for an 82-70 victory in a Southland Conference men’s basketball game Friday night at Burton Coliseum.
A crowd of 4,612 saw the Cowboys improve to 11-3 overall and open conference play with a win, while Lamar fell to .500 at 7-7.
The game’s pivotal stretch came early in the second half. Leading 39-34 at halftime, McNeese State opened the final period on a 10-2 run, extending its lead to 49-36 with 17:30 remaining. The Cowboys’ defense fueled the spurt, forcing three Lamar turnovers in the first three minutes. Lamar never recovered, as the Cowboys maintained a double-digit cushion for nearly the entire remainder of the contest. The Cardinals managed to cut the deficit to nine points on several occasions but could not mount a sustained threat.
Javohn Garcia led the Cowboys with 15 points, but it was the supporting cast that provided the crucial depth. Larry Johnson came off the bench to add 19 points, while Garwey Dual contributed 11 points and four assists. Tyshawn Archie filled the stat sheet with 13 points and four blocks, and Peitok Machar added eight points. The Cowboys’ bench outscored Lamar’s reserves 45-19.
Lamar was led by a game-high 21 points from Andrew Holifield, a 6-foot-10 forward from Beaumont, Texas. Rob Lee added 15 points and three assists, and Braden East scored 12 points. The Cardinals struggled to find consistent offense outside of their top performers, particularly against McNeese State’s defensive pressure, which generated 11 steals.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. Holifield was electric early, hitting three first-half three-pointers to keep Lamar close. The Cardinals led 17-15 midway through the period after a Braden East dunk, but McNeese State responded with a 14-4 run, capped by a Tyshawn Archie three-pointer, to take a 29-21 advantage. Lamar closed the gap to five by halftime, but the Cowboys’ second-half opening salvo quickly erased any momentum the Cardinals carried into the break.
McNeese State, which entered the game as a heavy favorite according to national analytics and betting lines, controlled the game’s tempo and capitalized on Lamar’s 15 turnovers, converting them into 19 points. The Cowboys also dominated inside, outscoring Lamar 40-28 in the paint.
The victory extends McNeese State’s strong start to the season, which includes notable non-conference wins over George Washington and Rhode Island. Lamar, coming off two consecutive road wins to close December, saw its brief winning streak snapped.
Lamar looks to rebound quickly, traveling to face Southeastern Louisiana on Monday. McNeese State continues its homestand, also on Monday, against Stephen F. Austin in another Southland Conference matchup. The two teams will meet again in Beaumont, Texas, on Jan. 31.
