Arizona Overpowers Alabama in Second Half for Road Victory
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Interstat) — In a clash of contrasting styles, the undefeated Arizona Wildcats used a dominant second-half surge fueled by relentless offensive rebounding and a stifling defensive effort to overwhelm the Alabama Crimson Tide 96-75 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
A crowd of 14,948 saw the Wildcats, now 9-0, erase a two-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Crimson Tide 57-34 after intermission. The decisive run was a microcosm of the game’s defining theme: Arizona’s sheer physicality and hustle against Alabama’s perimeter-oriented attack and shot-blocking prowess.
The most important part of the game was Arizona’s immediate and overwhelming response to start the second half. Trailing 41-39, the Wildcats opened the period on a 19-4 blitz over the first six minutes, transforming a tight contest into a commanding double-digit lead they would never relinquish. This run was powered by the two elements Alabama could not counter: second-chance points and forced turnovers.
Arizona’s Brayden Burries, a sophomore guard from San Bernardino, California, spearheaded the charge, scoring 28 points, with 18 coming in the second half. His back-to-back three-pointers early in the period ignited the run and stretched the Alabama defense. He was supported by a balanced attack that saw Motiejus Krivas, the 7-foot-2 center from Lithuania, score 14 points and Anthony Dell’Orso add 13.
However, the statistical disparity told the full story. Arizona annihilated Alabama on the glass, particularly on the offensive end, securing a staggering 20 offensive rebounds to Alabama’s three. This led to a 25-4 advantage in second-chance points. The Wildcats also forced 15 Alabama turnovers, converting them into 23 points, while committing only four turnovers of their own.
Alabama (7-3), which entered as a slight pregame favorite, was led by Labaron Philon of Mobile, Alabama, who scored 24 points, and Latrell Wrightsell of Omaha, Nebraska, who added 21. The Crimson Tide showcased its trademark shot-blocking, swatting away 15 Arizona attempts, with Aiden Sherrell recording eight and Taylor Bol Bowen adding four. But their offense, which shot just 25 of 56 from the field and managed only two assists for the entire game, grew stagnant and turnover-prone against Arizona’s pressure.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring 10 lead changes. Alabama’s defense, anchored by its rim protectors, initially frustrated Arizona, blocking eight shots in the opening period. The Tide took a 41-39 lead into the break behind 15 points from Philon. But Arizona’s adjustments at halftime were swift and devastating.
The Wildcats began the second half by attacking the basket with more purpose, cleaning up their own misses, and locking down defensively. Alabama missed eight of its first nine shots after halftime and committed four turnovers during Arizona’s game-breaking run. The Tide’s offense never recovered, shooting just 34.4% in the second half as the Wildcats steadily expanded their lead.
Arizona’s efficiency was notable, scoring 96 points on 78 possessions for an offensive rating of 123.9. Alabama managed just 75 points on 77 possessions, an offensive rating of 98.0. The Wildcats shot 42.9% from the field and made 10 three-pointers, while Alabama connected on 12 threes but was outscored 52-28 in the paint.
The victory extends Arizona’s perfect start to the season, with notable wins over Auburn, Connecticut, and now Alabama. The Wildcats next host Abilene Christian on Tuesday. Alabama, which saw a three-game winning streak snapped, will look to regroup when it hosts South Florida on Wednesday.
The total score of 171 fell just under the pregame over/under line of 173.
