Sun Devils Rally From 17 Down, Edge Broncos in Henderson
HENDERSON, Nev. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of momentum, the Arizona State Sun Devils erased a 17-point halftime deficit with a dominant second-half performance to stun the Santa Clara Broncos 82-79 in a nonconference men’s basketball game Saturday at Dollar Loan Center.
The game pivoted on a complete transformation after the break. Santa Clara, fueled by a blistering offensive display, led 55-38 at halftime. The Broncos shot 50% from the field in the opening period, with guard Christian Hammond of Denver scoring 15 of his game-high 22 points. Arizona State, meanwhile, looked disjointed, committing 10 turnovers that Santa Clara converted into 16 points.
The second half told a different story. Arizona State’s defensive intensity skyrocketed, holding Santa Clara to just 24 points on 27% shooting, including 2 of 13 from three-point range. The Sun Devils opened the half on a 15-3 run to quickly cut into the lead, setting the stage for a tense final 15 minutes.
“The message at halftime was simple: compete with more purpose and trust our system,“ Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley said. “Our guys showed tremendous resilience to climb out of that hole against a very good team.“
The Sun Devils’ comeback was a collective effort, led by their frontcourt. Senegalese center Massamba Diop, listed at 7-foot-1, was a force inside, finishing with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks, anchoring the defense during the pivotal second-half stand. Montenegrin forward Andrija Grbovic provided a critical spark off the bench, hitting three 3-pointers and scoring 13 points, all in the second half.
Guard Maurice Odum of the Bronx directed the offense, dishing out 7 assists to go with 12 points, while Anthony Johnson of Midfield, Alabama, contributed 15 points, including several key free throws down the stretch. Noah Meeusen of Ostend, Belgium, added 8 points, 4 assists, and 2 blocks, including a crucial rejection in the final seconds.
For Santa Clara, Hammond’s 22 points led all scorers, and Elijah Mahi of Toronto added 17 points and 8 rebounds. But the Broncos’ offense, so fluid in the first half, stagnated after intermission, managing only two field goals in the final seven minutes.
The most critical sequence came in the final minute. Leading 79-77, Arizona State’s Johnson was fouled and made both free throws with 21 seconds left to push the lead to four. On the ensuing possession, Santa Clara’s Francis Chukwudebelu hit a deep 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 81-79.
After an Arizona State turnover, Santa Clara had a chance to tie or take the lead. Hammond launched a contested 3-pointer with under five seconds left that was blocked by Meeusen. The Broncos secured the offensive rebound, but Sash Gavalyugov’s desperation three at the buzzer missed, sealing the Sun Devils’ remarkable comeback.
Statistically, Arizona State’s efficiency told the tale. The Sun Devils scored 82 points on just 72 possessions, an offensive rating of 113.8, while holding Santa Clara to 79 points on 81 possessions, a rating of 97.4. Arizona State shot 54.7% from the field and a sharp 47.6% from beyond the arc. The Sun Devils also owned a 38-32 advantage in points in the paint and a 17-6 edge in fast-break points, underscoring their second-half control.
With the victory, Arizona State improved to 9-2 overall, continuing a strong start that includes wins over Texas and Oklahoma. Santa Clara, which entered as a 2.5-point favorite, fell to 8-3. The Broncos had won six of their last seven, including an impressive road victory at Xavier.
Arizona State next travels to face UCLA on Wednesday in its Pac-12 opener. Santa Clara returns to action Wednesday against North Texas in a game to be played in Santa Cruz, California.
