Prairie View at Florida A&M
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum in the second half of the SWAC schedule will meet Monday when the Florida A&M Rattlers host the Prairie View A&M Panthers at the Alfred Lawson, Jr. Multipurpose Center.
Both teams enter the Feb. 9 contest on losing streaks and with nearly identical overall records. The visiting Panthers (9-14) fell 82-76 at Bethune-Cookman on Saturday. The Rattlers (8-13) dropped their third straight, a 62-57 home loss to Texas Southern on the same day.
The matchup features two of the conference’s key guards. Prairie View’s Lance Williams is coming off a season-high 22 points in 30 minutes against Bethune-Cookman. The Panthers are 2-0 this season when Williams scores 14 or more points. His playmaking will be crucial; he dished out seven assists in a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff last month.
Florida A&M will counter with Micah Octave, who has been a bright spot during the skid. He scored 18 points in the loss to Texas Southern and poured in 20 in a win over Grambling in January. His ability to score in bursts will be vital for a Rattlers offense that has struggled, failing to reach 70 points in any of its last four games.
Prairie View’s recent results have been a rollercoaster, featuring narrow road losses at Alcorn State and Jackson State but also a decisive home win over Texas Southern on Jan. 31. Florida A&M had won three straight in mid-January before its current downturn, which includes a one-point home loss to Jackson State.
The game is the only scheduled meeting between the programs this regular season. Following this contest, Prairie View begins a three-game homestand, starting with Southern on Feb. 14. Florida A&M hits the road for two games, beginning at Jackson State on Feb. 14.
Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. EST Monday in Tallahassee.
