Colgate Holds Off Fordham’s Second-Half Surge for Home Victory
LAVAL, QC (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant first-half performance and a resilient second-half response, the Colgate Raiders defeated the Fordham Rams 72-62 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Sunday at Place Bell.
The Raiders seized control of the contest from the opening tip, building a commanding 30-17 lead by halftime before holding off a spirited but ultimately insufficient comeback attempt from the Rams in the second half. The victory improved Colgate’s record to 5-4, while Fordham fell to 6-3.
Colgate’s first-half execution was nearly flawless, particularly on the defensive end. The Raiders stifled the Rams’ offense, forcing difficult shots and capitalizing on turnovers. Fordham struggled to find any offensive rhythm, shooting a dismal percentage from the field and from three-point range in the opening period. The Rams’ 17 first-half points underscored the effectiveness of the Colgate defensive scheme.
Andrew Alekseyenko, a 6-foot-8 forward from Brookline, Massachusetts, was instrumental in building the Raiders’ lead. He set the tone early, connecting on a three-pointer for the game’s first points and consistently finding seams in the Fordham defense. He finished with a team-high 16 points.
The second half presented a starkly different narrative. Fordham emerged from the locker room with renewed energy and purpose, spearheaded by the playmaking of guard Christian Henry. The Chicago native orchestrated the Rams’ offense, dishing out eight assists, many of which fueled a scoring surge that saw Fordham more than double its first-half output with 45 points.
Abass Bodija, a 6-foot-10 forward from Brisbane, Australia, provided a significant spark off the bench for the Rams. Despite playing only 15 minutes, Bodija was a model of efficiency, scoring 12 points on strong interior play. His efforts, combined with Henry’s facilitation, brought Fordham back within striking distance on multiple occasions.
However, every time the Rams threatened to close the gap completely, Colgate had an answer. Josh Ahayere, a 6-foot-4 guard from Morinville, Canada, was a key figure in stemming the Fordham tide. He scored 15 points, including several crucial baskets in the second half that extended the Raiders’ lead whenever it appeared to be shrinking.
The backcourt duo of Jalen Cox and Kyle Carlesimo provided Colgate with steady leadership and timely scoring. Cox, from Los Angeles, played a game-high 38 minutes, directing the offense and contributing six assists. Carlesimo, from Seattle, added 11 points, including a pair of important three-pointers that helped maintain Colgate’s cushion.
Despite Fordham’s improved second-half shooting, the team’s overall offensive inefficiency proved too large a hurdle to overcome. The Rams finished the game shooting just 4 of 18 from beyond the arc and recorded only five assists as a team, a testament to Colgate’s disruptive defense which also generated seven steals.
Defensively, Fordham received strong rim protection from Rikus Schulte of Munster, Germany, who blocked two shots, and Marcus Greene of Gilroy, California, who added another.
In the final minutes, with Fordham forced to foul in an attempt to extend the game, Colgate sealed the victory at the free-throw line, converting its opportunities to secure the 10-point margin. The Raiders were efficient from the charity stripe all afternoon, making 9 of 11 attempts.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 1,767 at Place Bell. Colgate now looks ahead to a home game against St. John Fisher on Saturday, Dec. 6. Fordham will return home to the Bronx to begin a three-game homestand, starting with a matchup against Holy Cross on the same date.
