Gonzaga Dominates Pepperdine in West Coast Conference Matchup
SPOKANE, Wash. (Interstat) — The Gonzaga Bulldogs, showcasing the depth and defensive intensity that has defined their dominant season, overwhelmed the Pepperdine Waves from the opening tip and cruised to an 84-60 victory in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at a sold-out McCarthey Athletic Center.
The most important part of the game was its inception. Gonzaga established immediate and total control, using a devastating 20-2 run that spanned the middle of the first half to turn a narrow 8-6 lead into an insurmountable 28-8 advantage. This decisive surge, fueled by relentless defensive pressure and efficient transition offense, rendered the remaining 30 minutes a formality and underscored the vast gap between the conference powerhouse and a struggling opponent.
The Bulldogs improved to 20-1 overall and remained perfect in league play, while the Waves fell to 6-15.
Gonzaga’s separation was swift. After Pepperdine’s Danilo Dozic scored inside to tie the game at 6-6 with just over 19 minutes left in the first half, the Waves’ offense collapsed under a hail of Gonzaga steals and fast breaks. The Bulldogs forced five turnovers during the pivotal run, converting them into easy baskets. Mario Saint-Supery, a guard from Malaga, Spain, was a catalyst, contributing a steal and a layup during the burst. When Davis Fogle of Anacortes, Washington, capped the run with a three-pointer off an assist from Steele Venters, the Bulldogs led 28-8 with 11:55 remaining in the half, and the outcome was effectively sealed.
The statistics painted a clear picture of Gonzaga’s comprehensive superiority. The Bulldogs scored 19 points off 15 Pepperdine turnovers and dominated in the paint, outscoring the Waves 48-26. Gonzaga’s transition game was lethal, generating 18 fastbreak points to Pepperdine’s 2. Defensively, Gonzaga matched Pepperdine’s 4 blocks but far exceeded them in steals, 10-5, which directly fueled their offensive onslaught.
Pepperdine, which shot a frigid 3 for 22 from three-point range, never found an offensive rhythm. The Waves were held to an offensive rating of 84.9 points per 100 possessions, a stark contrast to Gonzaga’s mark of 117.6. While Pepperdine stayed relatively close in rebounding and made 13 of 14 free throws, their 15 turnovers and inability to generate clean looks against Gonzaga’s defense were fatal flaws.
Saint-Supery led a balanced Gonzaga attack with 12 points, all in the first half, adding three steals in just 20 minutes. Fogle finished with a team-high 17 points and four assists. Tyon Grant-Foster provided 12 points off the bench, and Noah Haaland of Rathdrum, Idaho, added 10 points and several key offensive rebounds. The Bulldogs shared the ball effectively, tallying 10 assists on 31 made field goals.
For Pepperdine, Styles Phipps of Phoenix led the way with 13 points, and Aaron Clark of Easton, Pennsylvania, added 10 points and four assists. Dozic, from Belgrade, Serbia, scored 7 points but was hampered by turnovers. The Waves’ Serbian frontcourt mate, Pavle Stosic of Nis, provided a bright spot off the bench with 9 points.
Gonzaga took a 47-29 lead into halftime and maintained a comfortable margin throughout the second half, with the lead never dipping below 16 points. The Bulldogs’ depth allowed them to rotate freely, and the Waves could never mount a sustained challenge.
The game was a stark reversal from the teams’ meeting less than a month prior, a 40-point Gonzaga victory in Malibu. This result followed a similar script, reinforcing Gonzaga’s status as a national contender and Pepperdine’s ongoing struggles in a rebuilding season.
An announced crowd of 6,000 at the Kennel watched the Bulldogs win their eighth consecutive game. Gonzaga will host San Francisco on Saturday. Pepperdine travels to face Washington State, also on Saturday.
