Texas-San Antonio at North Texas
Preview: Struggling Roadrunners Face Mean Green in AAC Clash
DENTON, Texas (Interstat) — The North Texas Mean Green look to continue their push in the American Athletic Conference when they host the struggling Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners on Wednesday night at North Texas Coliseum.
The Mean Green (11-7, 2-3 AAC) are coming off a solid 71-63 road victory at Tulane on Sunday. They will be heavily favored against a UTSA squad (4-14, 0-5) mired in a 10-game losing streak. The Roadrunners’ last win came on Dec. 13.
North Texas is led by guard David Terrell, who is playing at an all-conference level. He nearly posted a triple-double against Tulane, finishing with 19 points, six rebounds and seven assists in 38 minutes. Over his last five games, Terrell is averaging 14.4 points and 4.4 assists.
UTSA, meanwhile, is searching for any spark to snap its skid. The Roadrunners are allowing 84.2 points per game during their losing streak, including a 95-69 defeat at Memphis on Sunday. Guard LJ Brown provided a bright spot in that loss, scoring a season-high 14 points in 24 minutes off the bench. His production will be needed against a stout North Texas defense.
The Mean Green have won three of their last four home games, with the only loss in that stretch a narrow 74-70 defeat to South Florida. UTSA has lost all seven of its true road games this season by an average margin of 24.7 points.
This is the first of two scheduled meetings between the programs this season. They are set to meet again in Denton on Feb. 7.
For North Texas, a win is essential to maintain momentum before a key home matchup with East Carolina on Saturday. For UTSA, the task is to find a way to be competitive and break a streak of futility that has defined its season.
