Sooners Dominate Paint, Roll Past Kangaroos

NORMAN, Okla. (Interstat) — The Oklahoma Sooners, leveraging a dominant first-half performance built on interior scoring and opportunistic defense, cruised to an 89-67 victory over the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos in a nonconference men’s basketball game Tuesday night at Lloyd Noble Center.

A crowd of 4,410 watched the Sooners improve to 8-3 on the season, while the Kangaroos fell to 2-10.

The game was effectively decided in the opening 20 minutes, as Oklahoma raced out to a 54-27 halftime lead. The Sooners established their authority early and never relented, shooting a blistering percentage from the field while stifling the Kangaroos’ offense. Oklahoma’s overwhelming advantage in the paint, where they outscored UMKC 48-16, and points off turnovers, which they led 24-12, formed the foundation of the lopsided result.

The most important part of the game was Oklahoma’s explosive and efficient start, which buried UMKC before the contest was 10 minutes old. The Sooners opened the game on a 17-2 run, capitalizing on Kangaroo turnovers and missed shots to fuel their transition game and establish an insurmountable lead. This initial burst set the tone for the entire evening, allowing Oklahoma to control the pace and rotate players freely throughout the second half.

Xzayvier Brown, a guard from Philadelphia, led all scorers with 21 points for Oklahoma, showcasing his ability to score at all three levels. Forward Derrion Reid of Grovetown, Georgia, added 15 points, and guard Nijel Pack from Indianapolis chipped in 15 points and four assists. The Sooners’ offensive execution was crisp, with the team assisting on a high percentage of its made baskets.

For Missouri-Kansas City, guard Karmello Branch of Tampa, Florida, provided a bright spot with a team-high 23 points, including several three-pointers in the second half after the outcome was no longer in doubt. Forward Jayson Petty from Phoenix added 12 points, and Chris Dockery of Las Vegas contributed 10 points off the bench.

Despite the Kangaroos showing more fight after halftime, outscoring Oklahoma 40-35 in the second period behind Branch’s scoring, the deficit was far too large to overcome. The Sooners’ defense, which recorded multiple blocks and steals, consistently disrupted UMKC’s offensive sets, holding them to a low shooting percentage for the game.

Oklahoma’s victory was expected, as pregame analytics gave the Sooners a 99.1% probability to win. They covered the large point spread as 28.5-point favorites, and the total score of 156 points went under the betting over/under line of 150.5.

The Sooners will look to carry this momentum into their next contest, a home game against Stetson on Monday, Dec. 22. Missouri-Kansas City, meanwhile, faces a quick turnaround with a road game at Oklahoma State on Thursday, Dec. 18, as they continue a difficult stretch of their schedule.
