Purdue Stays Unbeaten, Routs Texas Tech in Bahamas
NASSAU, Bahamas (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Purdue Boilermakers delivered a decisive 86-56 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday at the Baha Mar Championship.
The contest was effectively decided in the first half, as Purdue constructed an insurmountable 23-point lead by halftime. The Boilermakers shot a blistering 58 percent from the field for the game, a stark contrast to Texas Tech’s 33 percent shooting performance. This offensive disparity was the primary narrative of the evening, as Purdue consistently generated and converted high-percentage shots while the Red Raiders struggled to find any offensive rhythm.
From the opening tip, Purdue established control. Trey Kaufman-Renn opened the scoring with a jump shot just 53 seconds into the game, setting the tone for the half. While Texas Tech’s Donovan Atwell connected on a trio of three-pointers to keep the Red Raiders briefly competitive, the Boilermakers’ methodical attack proved relentless. A 13-2 run midway through the first period, punctuated by a three-pointer from CJ Cox and a dunk from Oscar Cluff, stretched the Purdue lead to double digits.
The Boilermakers’ ball movement was exceptional, leading to a series of open looks. As the half wound down, Purdue unleashed another devastating run, outscoring Texas Tech 15-4 over the final five minutes. A three-pointer from Fletcher Loyer and a last-second three from Braden Smith sent the Boilermakers into the locker room with a 49-26 advantage, having shot over 65 percent from the field in the period.
The second half saw no dramatic shift in momentum. Purdue maintained its offensive pressure, with Cluff and Daniel Jacobsen providing a formidable presence in the paint. Texas Tech, despite a game-high 15 points from JT Toppin, could never mount a significant challenge, as their shooting woes from beyond the arc continued. The Red Raiders finished the game 8 of 34 from three-point range.
Purdue’s victory was a testament to its balanced scoring attack and superior execution. Eight different Boilermakers scored at least nine points, led by Oscar Cluff’s 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Daniel Jacobsen provided a significant spark off the bench with 11 points, while Braden Smith orchestrated the offense with 10 points and seven assists. Trey Kaufman-Renn and Omer Mayer each added 12 points, while Fletcher Loyer and CJ Cox chipped in 10 points apiece.
For Texas Tech, Christian Anderson joined Toppin in double figures with 13 points, but the team’s overall offensive rating of 84.0 on 67 possessions underscored a night of frustration. The Red Raiders were also hampered at the free-throw line, converting only 8 of 14 attempts.
Defensively, Purdue’s length and positioning resulted in several disrupted possessions for Texas Tech, while the Boilermakers committed only eight turnovers against the Red Raiders’ seven steals.
With the win, Purdue remains undefeated, improving its season record to 6-0. The Boilermakers will return to West Lafayette to host Eastern Illinois on Friday, November 28. Texas Tech sees its record evened at 4-2 and will look to rebound when it hosts New Orleans on Wednesday, November 26.
