South Florida Routs Tulane in AAC Men’s Basketball Matchup

TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — Wes Enis scored 25 points and Izaiyah Nelson delivered a dominant all-around performance with 14 points and six assists as South Florida overwhelmed Tulane 90-62 in an American Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Sunday at the Sun Dome.

The Bulls, fueled by a blistering first-half offensive display, never trailed and led by double digits for the final 30 minutes to sweep the season series and solidify their position near the top of the conference standings. A crowd of 6,579 watched South Florida improve to 21-8 overall, while Tulane fell to 16-12.

The most important stretch of the game came early, as South Florida established immediate control with a combination of stifling defense and efficient offense. After Tulane’s Curtis Williams opened the second-half scoring with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to eight, the Bulls responded with a decisive 13-2 run over the next four minutes. The surge was capped by a Wes Enis layup off a feed from Isaiah Jones, pushing the lead to 62-43 and effectively extinguishing any hope of a Green Wave comeback. Tulane would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

South Florida set the tone from the opening tip, racing to a 9-0 lead as Tulane committed three quick turnovers. The Green Wave settled briefly, using a 7-0 spurt of their own to close within 12-11, but the Bulls answered with another burst. A 9-2 run, highlighted by an alley-oop dunk from Nelson assisted by Gavin Hightower, restored an eight-point advantage. South Florida continued to apply pressure, closing the first half on a 13-4 run over the final 3:37. Enis drilled a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer to send the Bulls into the locker room with a commanding 49-38 lead.

Enis, the 6-foot-2 guard from Conover, Ohio, was the catalyst, hitting 3-pointers and attacking the rim on his way to a game-high 25 points in 35 minutes, adding four assists. His backcourt mate, Josh Omojafo of Hamilton, Canada, contributed 16 points. The engine of the Bulls’ offense, however, was the 6-foot-10 Nelson from Marietta, Georgia. His six assists often came from the high post, dissecting the Tulane defense for easy baskets, and he added a game-high six assists to his 14 points.

Tulane was led by the scoring of Curtis Williams. The 6-foot-6 guard from Detroit fought through constant defensive attention to score 27 points in 37 minutes, but received limited consistent support. Scotty Middleton of Miami added 11 points and Rowan Brumbaugh of Washington, D.C., chipped in 11, but the Green Wave shot poorly as a team and committed 15 turnovers, which South Florida converted into 21 points.

The Bulls’ ball movement was exceptional, finishing with 22 assists on 34 made field goals. They also dominated in the paint, outscoring Tulane 48-26, and capitalized on second chances with 18 offensive rebounds leading to 19 points. Defensively, South Florida disrupted Tulane’s rhythm, holding them to 38% shooting in the second half as the lead ballooned.

The victory extends South Florida’s winning streak to three games as they head into the final week of the regular season. They will travel to face Memphis on Thursday. Tulane, which has lost two of its last three, looks to regroup on the road at Temple, also on Thursday.

The game’s outcome aligned with pregame expectations, as South Florida was a 14.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks. The combined score of 152 points fell under the posted over/under of 155.5.
