Preview: Michigan at Illinois Set for Big Ten Showdown

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (Interstat) — A high-stakes Big Ten clash with conference title and NCAA tournament seeding implications is set for Friday when the Michigan Wolverines visit the Illinois Fighting Illini at State Farm Center.

Michigan (26-2, 16-1 Big Ten), riding a seven-game winning streak since its only loss in the last 19 outings, brings the nation’s second-best record to Champaign. The Wolverines are coming off a 77-67 home win over Minnesota on Tuesday, led by 15 points and five assists from guard Elliot Cadeau.

Illinois (22-6, 13-4), however, presents one of the toughest remaining tests on Michigan’s schedule. The Fighting Illini have won five of their last seven, with their two losses in that span coming in overtime on the road, including a 95-94 heartbreaker at UCLA last Saturday.

The matchup features two of the conference’s premier guards. Michigan’s Cadeau has been a consistent catalyst, averaging 12.1 points and 6.1 assists over his last eight games, including a 17-point, 7-assist effort in a key road win at Purdue. Illinois will counter with Keaton Wagler, a dynamic scorer coming off a 34-point performance against Wisconsin and averaging 21.4 points over his last five contests.

Despite Illinois’ strong resume and home-court advantage, Michigan is a narrow 1.5-point favorite according to FanDuel Sportsbook, with an over/under set at 155.5 points. Analytics site Interstat gives the Wolverines a slight 52.2% probability to win.

The game is a standalone national broadcast on Friday night, offering the winner a significant resume boost ahead of March. For Michigan, a victory would solidify its hold on the Big Ten regular-season crown. For Illinois, a win would provide a signature result and keep pressure on the conference leaders.

Illinois hosts Oregon next Tuesday, while Michigan’s next game is at Iowa on March 5.
