Duquesne Holds Off Saint Bonaventure Rally for Road Win
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a gritty, turnover-fueled Atlantic 10 Conference clash on Saturday, the Duquesne Dukes avenged a loss from just over two weeks prior by holding off a furious second-half rally from Saint Bonaventure to secure a 78-73 victory at a packed Reilly Center.
The game, played before a Valentine’s Day crowd of 4,112, was defined by Duquesne’s disruptive defense and Saint Bonaventure’s struggle to maintain possession. The Dukes forced 14 Bonnies turnovers, converting them into 24 points, while committing only six of their own. That 18-turnover disparity proved to be the decisive statistical chasm in a contest otherwise closely fought in the paint and on the glass.
Duquesne seized control from the opening tip, leveraging its defensive pressure into early offense. The Dukes opened the game on a 10-2 run, fueled by steals and Bonnies miscues. Saint Bonaventure’s star forward Frank Mitchell, who would finish with a dominant 20 points and 13 rebounds, was responsible for three of his team’s four first-half turnovers as Duquesne’s swarming guards and active hands disrupted the Bonnies’ rhythm.
The Dukes’ offensive execution in the first half was efficient, building a lead that grew to as many as 16 points. A balanced attack saw Jimmie Williams score 12 of his team-high 19 points before intermission, while Tarence Guinyard added 11 of his 18. Duquesne shot confidently from deep, hitting 7 of 16 three-point attempts in the half, and took a commanding 45-33 lead into the locker room.
The second half, however, was a stark reversal. Saint Bonaventure emerged with renewed purpose, attacking the basket relentlessly. Mitchell and guard Dasonte Bowen, who scored 16 of his 18 points after halftime, led the charge. The Bonnies methodically chipped away at the deficit, leveraging their size advantage to outscore Duquesne 34-20 in the paint during the half.
A 12-2 Bonnies run midway through the period brought the home crowd to a fever pitch, cutting the Dukes’ lead to just three points. Cayden Charles, who contributed 16 points and seven rebounds for Saint Bonaventure, became a focal point, driving and drawing fouls. The Bonnies finally drew even at 64-64 on a Mitchell layup with under six minutes to play, completing a dramatic comeback from the 12-point halftime hole.
The game’s most critical sequence unfolded in the final three minutes with the score tied at 70. After a Duquesne miss, Saint Bonaventure had two chances to take its first lead since the game’s opening minute. Mitchell was blocked by Alex Williams on one attempt, and on the ensuing possession, a Bowen drive was met by a Brandon Hall rejection. Duquesne secured the rebound, and on the other end, Williams drained a clutch three-pointer from the wing with 1:08 remaining to put the Dukes ahead for good at 73-70.
Saint Bonaventure had a chance to answer, but a tough three-point attempt from Darryl Simmons was off the mark. Duquesne’s David Dixon secured the defensive rebound, was fouled, and made one of two free throws to extend the lead to four with 28 seconds left. The Bonnies’ final hopes were extinguished when a turnover led to a Guinyard breakaway layup, sealing the five-point victory for the visitors.
Despite being outshot 49.1% to 44.4% from the field, Duquesne’s advantages in three-point shooting (11 made to Saint Bonaventure’s 3) and, most crucially, ball security were the pillars of the win. Alex Williams provided a vital spark off the bench for the Dukes with 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Mitchell’s double-double led the Bonnies, who also got 11 points from Simmons. But the team’s paltry three assists, emblematic of their stagnant and often disrupted offense, contrasted sharply with Duquesne’s more fluid, if not always accurate, attack.
The victory improved Duquesne to 15-10 overall and marked a significant bounce-back after the Bonnies had defeated them in Pittsburgh on Jan. 28. Saint Bonaventure fell to 14-11 with the loss, its second in three games. Both teams continue their Atlantic 10 schedules on Wednesday, with Duquesne hosting La Salle and Saint Bonaventure welcoming Saint Joseph’s.
