Pacific Dominates Pepperdine in Wire-to-Wire Road Victory
MALIBU, Calif. (Interstat) — The Pacific Tigers delivered a commanding and efficient performance on the road Saturday night, overwhelming the Pepperdine Waves 92-59 in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game at Firestone Fieldhouse.
From the opening tip, Pacific established a pace and precision that Pepperdine could not match. The Tigers shot a blistering 53.2% from the field and an even more impressive 60.9% from three-point range, connecting on 14 of 23 attempts. Their offensive execution was near flawless, scoring 92 points on just 70 possessions for an offensive rating of 131.2, while their defense held the Waves to a paltry 79.8 rating on the other end.
The game was effectively decided in the first half. Pacific built a 41-25 lead by intermission, fueled by a balanced attack and stifling defense that limited Pepperdine to 20-of-56 shooting for the game. The Tigers also dominated the assist column, dishing out eight compared to just three for the Waves, and forced 12 Pepperdine turnovers while committing only nine themselves.
Pacific guard Jaden Clayton, a junior from Whitby, Canada, orchestrated the victory with a masterful all-around game. He scored 17 points and handed out eight assists in 35 minutes, controlling the tempo and repeatedly finding open teammates. His backcourt partner, TJ Wainwright of Los Angeles, provided the explosive scoring punch, pouring in a game-high 27 points on efficient shooting, including three three-pointers, in just 28 minutes of action.
The Tigers’ frontcourt contributed significantly as well. Forward Elias Ralph of Okotoks, Canada, added 14 points and four assists, while center Isaac Jack of Port Alberni, Canada, chipped in 12 points. Justin Rochelin provided a spark off the bench with 10 points, and Alexis Marmolejos hit two late three-pointers to finish with six points.
For Pepperdine, which struggled to find any consistent offensive rhythm, Aaron Clark led the way with 17 points. Javon Cooley added 15 points and two blocks, but the Waves were hampered by poor shooting, making only 7 of 19 from beyond the arc and 12 of 21 from the free-throw line. They were also outrebounded on the offensive glass, with Pacific securing eight offensive boards to Pepperdine’s four.
The most important stretch of the game came late in the first half, turning a solid lead into a decisive one. With Pacific already ahead, the Tigers closed the period on a 14-5 run over the final 4:27. The surge was ignited by a three-pointer from TJ Wainwright, assisted by Elias Ralph, and capped by another Wainwright three, this time from Clayton. This burst pushed the lead to 41-25 at halftime and shattered any lingering momentum for the home team, setting the stage for a second half that was never in doubt.
With the victory, Pacific improved to 16-10 overall this season. Pepperdine fell to 6-19. The Tigers avenged a closer 74-69 win over the Waves earlier this season on Jan. 4 and will look to carry this momentum into a home game against Loyola Marymount on Wednesday. Pepperdine faces a difficult road test at Saint Mary’s on the same night.
A crowd of 584 at Firestone Fieldhouse witnessed a game that was statistically one-sided from start to finish. Pacific’s shooting clinic and defensive pressure proved far too much for a Pepperdine team that has now lost four of its last five games. The Tigers’ performance, marked by unselfish ball movement and scorching outside shooting, served as a reminder of their potential when their offense operates at peak efficiency.
