Santa Clara Broncos Dominate Second Half to Defeat San Francisco Dons

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a suffocating defensive performance, the Santa Clara Broncos pulled away in the second half to defeat the San Francisco Dons 88-73 in a West Coast Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at a packed Leavey Center.

The Broncos, who entered as heavy favorites, used a 12-2 run early in the second half to break open a tight contest and never looked back, outscoring San Francisco 54-42 after halftime. The victory improved Santa Clara’s record to 18-5 overall, while San Francisco fell to 13-10.

The most critical sequence of the game came just after halftime. Leading by only three points, 34-31, at the break, Santa Clara emerged from the locker room with intensified pressure. The Broncos forced a series of rushed shots and turnovers by the Dons, converting them into easy transition opportunities. A Christian Hammond three-pointer, followed by quick baskets from Elijah Mahi and Brenton Knapper, swiftly extended the lead to double digits. This burst established a tempo and margin that San Francisco, plagued by offensive inconsistency all night, could never overcome.

Santa Clara’s dominance was rooted in defensive efficiency and ball security. The Broncos forced 14 San Francisco turnovers while committing only six themselves, translating into a 12-4 advantage in steals. This disruptive defense limited the Dons’ offensive flow, holding them to just four total assists for the game. Offensively, Santa Clara was efficient, shooting 50.8% from the field and a blistering 46.2% from three-point range. They also capitalized on their possessions, scoring 88 points on just 68 trips down the floor for an offensive rating of 129.1.

Hammond, a guard from Denver, led all scorers with 21 points, including three three-pointers, and added two assists. Mahi, from Toronto, provided 18 points and was a constant menace defensively. Allen Graves contributed 11 points and three assists, while reserve KJ Cochran chipped in 11 points, all in the first half, to provide a crucial spark.

San Francisco was led by center Guillermo Diaz Graham, who tallied 15 points, five assists and a blocked shot. Ryan Beasley and Junjie Wang each added 11 points, but the Dons struggled to find a consistent scoring rhythm. They shot 46.4% from the field but were hampered by their 15-for-23 performance from the free-throw line and their inability to generate clean looks against Santa Clara’s active defense.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair featuring eight lead changes. San Francisco’s largest lead was four points, but Santa Clara closed the period on a 7-2 mini-run to take the slim three-point advantage into intermission. The Dons stayed close early in the second half, cutting the deficit to 41-39 on a David Fuchs layup with 17:05 remaining. That was as close as they would get, as Santa Clara answered with the decisive run that put the game out of reach.

The game’s final margin comfortably covered the pregame spread, as Santa Clara was installed as an 8.5-point favorite. The total score of 161 points sailed over the over/under line of 149.5.

Santa Clara will look to continue its strong conference play when it travels to face Loyola Marymount on Saturday. San Francisco returns home to host Pacific on Saturday, seeking to rebound from the loss. The two Bay Area rivals are scheduled to meet again in three weeks at San Francisco’s War Memorial Gymnasium.
