Arkansas Routs Vanderbilt in SEC Men’s Basketball Showdown
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Arkansas Razorbacks delivered a decisive 93-68 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores in a Southeastern Conference men’s basketball matchup Tuesday night at a sold-out Bud Walton Arena.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 19,200, was never close after the opening minutes. Arkansas seized control with a blistering first-half performance, shooting 57.1% from the field and building a 46-35 halftime lead. The Razorbacks then expanded their advantage in the second half, outscoring Vanderbilt 47-33 to cruise to the 25-point win, their largest margin of victory in SEC play this season.
The most important part of the game was Arkansas’s sustained and overwhelming offensive execution, which began early and never relented. After a slow start from both teams, the Razorbacks used a 13-2 run midway through the first half to establish a double-digit lead they would never relinquish. The surge was fueled by balanced scoring and unselfish play, hallmarks of their performance all night. Vanderbilt, which entered the game with a 16-2 record, had no answer for Arkansas’s pace and shot-making, struggling to string together stops as the Razorbacks consistently generated high-percentage looks.
Arkansas operated with remarkable efficiency, scoring 93 points on just 69 possessions for an offensive rating of 135.4. They shot 57.8% from the field overall and connected on 9 of 22 three-point attempts. The Razorbacks also dominated inside, outscoring Vanderbilt in the paint and converting 10 of 12 free throws. Defensively, they forced nine Vanderbilt turnovers and blocked four shots, with Trevon Brazile recording two of those blocks.
Vanderbilt, conversely, managed only 68 points on 68 possessions for an offensive rating of 100.0. The Commodores shot just 37.9% from the floor and were heavily reliant on perimeter shooting, making 10 of 31 from beyond the arc. Tyler Nickel led Vanderbilt with 17 points, all coming on jump shots, while Tyler Tanner added 11 points and a team-high six assists. The Commodores’ offense often stagnated against Arkansas’s defensive activity, resulting in only five assists as a team.
Arkansas’s victory was a product of a deep and cohesive team effort. Five Razorbacks scored in double figures, led by Darius Acuff Jr. with 17 points and five assists. Malique Ewin provided a major spark off the bench, scoring 16 points on perfect 6-for-6 shooting from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in just 23 minutes. Karter Knox also scored 16 points, while Meleek Thomas filled the stat sheet with 13 points and five assists. Trevon Brazile was a force on both ends, contributing 10 points, five assists, two blocks, and a game-high four steals.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Vanderbilt in SEC play and dropped the Commodores to 16-3 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Arkansas improved to 14-5 overall and evened its SEC record at 3-3. The Razorbacks have now won two of their last three conference games after dropping their first two.
The game’s statistical profile underscored Arkansas’s dominance. The teams were nearly even in rebounds, assists, steals, and turnovers, but the vast disparity in shooting percentage told the story. Arkansas’s ability to convert its opportunities at a high clip, combined with timely defensive plays that disrupted Vanderbilt’s rhythm, created a gap that proved insurmountable for the visiting Commodores.
With the win, Arkansas builds momentum heading into a critical stretch of SEC play. Vanderbilt will look to regroup as both teams continue their pursuit of postseason positioning in the rugged conference schedule.
