Williams Powers Arkansas-Pine Bluff Past Texas Southern

HOUSTON (Interstat) — Quion Williams recorded a monstrous double-double of 16 points and 17 rebounds, and the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions withstood a furious second-half rally from Texas Southern to secure a 74-66 victory in a Southwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday night at Health & P.E. Arena.

The Golden Lions (6-10, 3-0 SWAC) built a commanding 18-point lead in the first half and led by as many as 19 early in the second before the Tigers (2-12, 0-3) mounted a relentless comeback that cut the deficit to a single possession in the final minutes. Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s composure and key plays down the stretch, however, allowed them to snap a two-game road skid in the series and remain unbeaten in conference play.

The game’s defining stretch was its opening act. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, led by Williams’ all-court energy, suffocated Texas Southern defensively from the tip. The Tigers managed just one field goal in the first eight minutes, committing six turnovers during that span. Williams, a 6-foot-5 guard from Jonesboro, Arkansas, set the tone with an early 3-pointer, multiple steals, and relentless work on the glass at both ends.

His effort fueled a 23-6 run that gave the Golden Lions a 25-8 advantage. Texas Southern’s offensive struggles were profound, shooting a frigid percentage in the first half and scoring only 25 points. Arkansas-Pine Bluff took a 34-25 lead into halftime, a margin that felt larger given the Tigers’ inability to find any offensive rhythm.

The second half presented a stark contrast. Texas Southern, led by the interior duo of Troy Hupstead and Alex Anderson, found its footing. Hupstead, a 6-foot-7 forward from Mount Vernon, New York, finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Anderson, from Memphis, Tennessee, added 16 points and five boards. The Tigers began attacking the paint and capitalizing on transition opportunities, slowly chipping away at the lead.

A 12-2 run midway through the half, capped by a Jaylen Wysinger free throw, brought Texas Southern within 42-39 with 9:26 remaining, sending a jolt through the home crowd of 486. The Golden Lions’ once-comfortable lead had nearly evaporated.

Facing the mounting pressure, Arkansas-Pine Bluff turned to its balanced scoring attack to stem the tide. Jaquan Scott, a 6-foot-8 forward from Dallas, provided critical interior offense, leading all scorers with 18 points. Milhan Charles of Bristol, Connecticut, added 13 points, and Ramel Lloyd from Long Beach, California, chipped in 14, including timely baskets whenever Texas Southern threatened.

Each time the Tigers closed the gap, the Golden Lions had an answer. After Texas Southern pulled to 55-52 on a Zytarious Mortle 3-pointer with 3:51 left, Williams responded with a clutch 3-pointer of his own on the ensuing possession. When the Tigers again closed to 59-57 following a series of free throws, Scott converted a tough layup and a subsequent free throw to push the lead back to five.

The final minute was a tense affair of free throws and crucial stops. A flagrant foul called on Williams with 1:08 left allowed Texas Southern’s Zaire Hayes to make three free throws, cutting the lead to 62-61. Hayes, who finished with 11 points, then gave the Tigers their first lead since the game’s opening minute with a driving layup to make it 66-64 with just 32 seconds remaining.

Undeterred, Arkansas-Pine Bluff executed when it mattered most. Williams atoned for his earlier foul by securing an offensive rebound off a missed layup and powering it back up for a game-tying score. Following a Texas Southern turnover, the Golden Lions sealed the game at the free-throw line, closing the contest on a 10-0 run over the final 32 seconds as the Tigers’ offense went silent.

Alex Mirhosseini, the 5-foot-10 guard from Arlington, Texas, was instrumental in the backcourt for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, contributing nine points, multiple steals, and steady ball-handling against Texas Southern’s late pressure.

The victory extends Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s winning streak to three games as they continue their SWAC schedule. Texas Southern, which was projected as a significant favorite by advanced metrics pregame, continues to search for its first conference win amid a difficult season.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff travels to face Prairie View on Monday. Texas Southern will host Mississippi Valley State, also on Monday.
