Mercyhurst Edges Wagner in Defensive Struggle

NEW YORK (Interstat) — Bernie Blunt scored 23 points to lead Mercyhurst to a 70-69 victory over Wagner in a Northeast Conference men’s basketball game Saturday at Spiro Sports Center.

The Lakers, who improved to 7-10, survived despite being outshot from three-point range. The Seahawks, who fell to 6-9, made 10 three-pointers to Mercyhurst’s five but were undone by 12 turnovers and poor free-throw shooting. Wagner went 9 for 16 at the line.

Mercyhurst’s defense was pivotal, recording seven blocks and six steals. Qadir Martin anchored that effort with six blocks for the Lakers. Nick Jones led Wagner with 20 points.

The Seahawks had a chance to win on their final possession but could not convert.
