Johnston Leads Richmond to Upset Win Over Saint Bonaventure
KNAPP CREEK, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game few outside their own locker room believed they could win, the Richmond Spiders authored a statement victory on the road Wednesday night. Defying heavy pregame odds, Richmond used a blistering offensive performance and a decisive second-half surge to defeat the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies 89-80 in an Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball clash at a sold-out Reilly Center.
The Spiders, projected by statistical models to have less than a 16 percent chance of victory and facing a six-point spread, improved to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in the A-10. The Bonnies, who entered as one of the conference’s top teams, fell to 11-4 and 1-1, suffering a significant home setback in front of 3,008 fans.
The story of the game was Richmond’s surgical offensive efficiency, which overwhelmed a usually stout Saint Bonaventure defense. The Spiders scored 89 points on just 71 possessions, translating to an elite offensive rating of 124.9. They shot 52.7 percent from the field and, crucially, made 23 of 30 free throws. Saint Bonaventure, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of 107.9, shooting 45.1 percent overall and a frigid 8 for 28 from three-point range.
The contest was tight through the first 25 minutes, with Richmond taking a narrow 40-37 lead into halftime. The Spiders’ advantage hovered around a single possession for the opening stages of the second half. The critical, game-defining sequence arrived just past the midway point of the final period.
With Richmond leading 53-49 and just over nine minutes remaining, the Spiders unleashed a devastating 12-2 run that broke the game open. The burst was fueled by their two stars. Will Johnston, the sophomore guard from Sydney, Australia, drilled a three-pointer. On the next possession, after a Saint Bonaventure turnover, Johnston found AJ Lopez for a thunderous dunk in transition. Lopez, a junior from Queens, New York, then hit a tough turnaround jumper. When Johnston capped the run with a pull-up jump shot, Richmond’s lead had ballooned to 65-51 with 7:58 to play, forcing a stunned Bonnies timeout.
Saint Bonaventure, led by the gritty guard play of Darryl Simmons and Dasonte Bowen, refused to capitulate. They chipped away, cutting the deficit to 73-65 on a Simmons three-pointer with 3:23 left. But every time the Bonnies threatened, Richmond had an answer, often at the free-throw line. The Spiders went 15 for 20 from the stripe in the second half, consistently halting Saint Bonaventure’s momentum and keeping the lead at a safe distance.
Johnston was the catalyst for Richmond, finishing with a game-high 24 points in 28 minutes, adding three assists. Lopez was equally brilliant, contributing 19 points. Their backcourt combination outshone a strong effort from Saint Bonaventure’s Simmons, who played all 40 minutes and scored 18 points, and Bowen, who had 15 points and four assists.
Richmond’s depth also proved vital. Aiden Argabright and Mikkel Tyne each chipped in 10 points, while reserve forward Collin Tanner provided a huge first-half spark with all 10 of his points before the break. The Spiders’ defense, while yielding 80 points, created key turnovers at timely moments, finishing with seven steals and three blocks, two from center Mike Walz.
Saint Bonaventure’s Frank Mitchell recorded a double-double with 14 points and five assists, and Daniel Egbuniwe added 13 points, but the Bonnies could not match Richmond’s offensive firepower or poise down the stretch. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for Saint Bonaventure, which had won five of its last six.
For Richmond, the victory serves as a massive confidence boost following a up-and-down start to conference play that included a loss to George Washington. It demonstrated their capability to win in one of the league’s most hostile environments against a preseason contender. The Spiders will look to build on this momentum when they host Saint Joseph’s on Sunday.
Saint Bonaventure, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as it prepares to host Fordham on Saturday, seeking to avoid an 0-2 start at home in A-10 play. The Bonnies’ defensive identity, a hallmark of their early-season success, will be a point of emphasis after allowing Richmond to shoot nearly 53 percent from the field.
The total points scored, 169, sailed over the pregame over/under line of 150.5, a testament to the offensive display put on by the Spiders in a game they controlled for the majority of the second half to secure a pivotal conference road win.
