Lindenwood Rallies Past Charleston Southern at Bulldog Bash
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Interstat) — In a neutral-site contest defined by defensive pressure and a tale of two halves, the Lindenwood Lions overcame a significant halftime deficit to defeat the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 83-77 in a men’s NCAA Division I basketball game Friday at Joe W. Davis Stadium.
The Lions, who improved to 2-2, were led by a dominant performance from Jadis Jones. The 6-foot-5 guard from New Madrid, Missouri, poured in 30 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out six assists, spearheading a second-half comeback after his team trailed by 13 points at the break.
Charleston Southern, which fell to 2-3, controlled the first half with efficient perimeter shooting and took a 41-28 lead into the locker room. The Buccaneers connected on 10 3-pointers in the game, but their offensive rhythm was disrupted after halftime by a swarming Lindenwood defense.
The Lions’ comeback was fueled by a dramatic shift in defensive intensity. After forcing just five Buccaneer turnovers in the first half, Lindenwood’s full-court pressure generated 11 more in the second half, leading to easy transition opportunities. The Lions finished the game with 13 steals, more than doubling Charleston Southern’s total of five.
Lindenwood’s offensive efficiency also improved markedly. After shooting 37.5% from the field in the opening period, the Lions shot 50% in the second half, exploding for 55 points. They scored 17 fastbreak points, capitalizing on the turnovers they created.
While Jones was the catalyst, he received crucial support from his frontcourt. Milos Nenadic, a 6-foot-10 forward from Kitchener, Canada, recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, adding a block and a steal. Clayton Jackson, a guard from St. Louis, contributed 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Charleston Southern was led by Brycen Blaine, a 6-foot-5 guard from Richmond, Virginia, who scored 22 points, collected six rebounds and handed out five assists. However, his eight turnovers were symptomatic of his team’s struggles against the Lions’ pressure. A’lahn Sumler added 10 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Buccaneers.
The game was a statistical oddity, as both teams finished with an identical 28 made field goals. The difference came at the free-throw line and in ball security. Lindenwood attempted 31 free throws, making 21, while Charleston Southern went 11 for 16 from the stripe. More critically, the Buccaneers committed 16 total turnovers compared to the Lions’ 11, with Lindenwood’s 13 assists far outpacing Charleston Southern’s five.
Reis Jones provided a significant defensive presence for Charleston Southern, blocking four shots, but it was not enough to stave off the Lions’ relentless second-half charge.
The game was part of a multi-team event in Huntsville. Lindenwood will next face Alabama A&M on Sunday, while Charleston Southern returns home to host IU Indy on Tuesday.
