Auburn Outlasts Bethune-Cookman in Overtime Thriller to Open Season

AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — In a stunning season opener that defied all statistical probability, the Auburn Tigers narrowly avoided a historic upset, outlasting a relentless Bethune-Cookman team 95 to 90 in overtime Monday night at a raucous Auburn Arena.

Interstat’s ELO system had given the Tigers a 99.80 percent chance of victory, but for 45 minutes, the visiting Wildcats played with the conviction of a heavy favorite, pushing the Southeastern Conference powerhouse to its absolute limit before a crowd of 9,121.

The game was a tale of contrasting efficiencies and sheer will. Bethune-Cookman, despite scoring fewer points, operated with a surgeon’s precision for much of the contest. The Wildcats scored 90 points on just 78 possessions, translating to an elite offensive rating of 115.0. Auburn, by contrast, needed 87 possessions to reach its total, posting a lower offensive rating of 109.1. The difference came down to a few critical plays in the extra period and a glaring disparity at the free-throw line.

Auburn attempted 38 free throws, connecting on 27, while Bethune-Cookman went to the line only nine times, making eight. That 19-point advantage from the charity stripe ultimately provided the Tigers the cushion they desperately needed to survive.

The first half set the tone for the nail-biter, with Bethune-Cookman taking a slender 37 to 38 lead into the break. The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with the Wildcats scoring 44 points to Auburn’s 43, sending the game into an extra five minutes knotted at 81.

In the overtime period, Auburn’s composure and ability to draw fouls finally created separation. The Tigers outscored the Wildcats 14 to 9 in the final frame to secure the victory and begin their season 1-0, while Bethune-Cookman fell to 0-1.

Despite the loss, Bethune-Cookman’s performance was a masterclass in efficient shooting. The Wildcats shot a blistering 54 percent from the field, connecting on 35 of 69 attempts, and were even more impressive from beyond the arc, hitting 12 of 22 three-pointers for a 55 percent success rate. Auburn shot a respectable 47 percent from the floor but struggled from deep, making only 6 of 23 three-point attempts.

Keyshawn Hall was the offensive engine for Auburn, pouring in a game-high 28 points in 37 minutes of action. His scoring prowess kept the Tigers afloat during stretches where the Wildcats threatened to pull away. He was complemented by KeShawn Murphy, who provided a highly efficient and versatile performance off the bench. In just 19 minutes, Murphy tallied 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds while dishing out four assists. Sebastian Williams-Adams also made significant contributions with 15 points and six rebounds.

Bethune-Cookman’s effort was a collective one, led by a dominant double-double from Arterio Morris. The forward logged 36 minutes, scoring 20 points and corralling 10 rebounds. Quentin Heady led the Wildcats in scoring with 21 points, while Daniel Rouzan was a force on both ends, adding 16 points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. Seneca Willoughby facilitated the offense effectively, chipping in 12 points and a team-high four assists.

The statistical sheet was remarkably even in several categories. Auburn narrowly led in offensive rebounds, assists, and steals, while Bethune-Cookman recorded twice as many blocks, eight to four. Both teams committed a similar number of turnovers.

The near-upset sends Bethune-Cookman into a challenging early-season schedule with a moral victory and the knowledge they can compete with anyone. The Wildcats travel to face Miami (Fla.) on Thursday. Auburn, having survived a monumental scare, will look to regroup before hosting Merrimack, also on Thursday. The Tigers’ schedule intensifies quickly, with a looming neutral-site clash against Houston on Nov. 16 and a tough road game at Arizona on Dec. 6. For one night, however, the story was not about Auburn’s future challenges, but about a team from Daytona Beach, Florida, that came within a few possessions of one of the most improbable wins in recent college basketball history.
